There are many ways to keep oneself "busy or occupied no matter how old you are" but that includes things like looking after grand children and gardening, not working 9-5!Originally posted by ShutterBug:Well, what's new man...?
Anyway, I know of quite a lot of old men and women, who prefers to be actively working or doing something even though their aging. I too feel that it is good to keep one's self busy or occupied no matter how old you are. Activity keeps your spirit up, as such, it also preserves reasonable health.
However, I doubt the old and SICK will find this 'Silver Idea' appealing; how can a sick and old person slog on for a daily living? What's more, old folks who are now working are doing so on their own accord, because they need to pay for their monthly medicals and medications. And for the paltry income they make, our gov is even considering making these aged lower income groups, contribute CPF and Medisave. Walao... really heartless..!
haiz... no words to say about our gov...squeeze you till your last breath...!
For at least 50% it is too difficult to keep up because you know who keeps on taking so that there will be a pool of elderly workers to service the rich.Originally posted by LinYu:retirement?

"help" them get wash dishes jobs at the hawker center because everything purposely made so expensive they have no choice but to work to survive...Originally posted by thelesis:Hmmmm... but the problem is who is going to employ those elderlys? unless gov got a company that willing to employ those thousands of elderlys..

for current batch of old people who laboured all their lives in blue collared jobs because they had no education and are poverty stricken and no choice. To ask them to work 1 more day for their day of meals is torture.
for people who held white collared jobs all their lives, propably was born with silver spoon or are fairly rich to begin with, had good education and had the choice to choose better jobs and climb up the corporate ladder. They would find that having to work another day is perhaps considered a joy and no worries about the next meal.
So, its clear who the system is clearly thinking when making the policy.
You mean... they ever put THOUGHTS into the system???Originally posted by mistyblue:my dad made a point about the current batch of old people.

Theoractically it sounds good, yeah they are finally helping the older workers!Originally posted by ShutterBug:You mean... they ever put THOUGHTS into the system???![]()

BUT.
I have a feeling that this would be just another repeat of their policy to get Singaporeans to have more babies... in other words, sounds good but need to see what steps they are going to take... so no comments for now.
Basically, they are afraid that people will become lazy and complacent, and as a result, exhaust their precious reserves... which in effect, are the people's money originally.Originally posted by blueheeler:If the S'pore elderly want to work, they should do it on their own free will (probably to supplement their savings ans also to keep busy). But I agree that many of the aunties/uncles sweeping up shopping centres and wiping foodcourt tables are there because they are living hand-to-mouth.
I find it really sad that these elderly have to work long hours for low pay (the 60+ yr old cleangin-auntie at my office earns $900/month, working 12 hrs a day, 5-&-half days a week). In some 'western' countries, they have a 'pension' scheme for the elderly, where they get a monthly allowance (and also subsidised medical care/medicine). Before anyone 'slams' their welfare system as 'wasteful', just imagine your parents or grandparents having to wipe foodcourt tables for pittance. Thank goodness my parents are well-taken care of by their savings, and my brother and I).
according to www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_23/b3936141_mz035.htm, , S'pore has about $115,000,000,000 (yes $115 billion) worth of reserves. You mean ALL these reserves can't be somehow used to allow the elderly a more leisurely retirement? How can the increase in GST make sense, when the elderly (that the extra GST-revenues are supposed to help) bear the brunt of lowered-expandable-income?
And I thought S'pore is a pseudo-Confucionist state where respect for the elderly is paramount...

>> some people, their children did not do well academically, or simply did not have the money to support their education hence, they end up labourers, hawkers, and market vege sellers and such - how to support them in retirement? On their childrens end, their childrens' children need all the money they can earn for tertiary education so they can eventually end up competing with foreigners by accepting lower salaries... it goes on in a vicious circle...Originally posted by Gazelle:Why nobody is blaming their children for not providing enough for them go into semi retirement?

Before anyone can take any action, I think it would be prudent to wait for the "Berlin Wall" to eventually be taken down. Otherwise, anyone trying to oppose them, will only end up like CSJ - lawsuits after lawsuits, jail term after jail term.Originally posted by bladez87:can some of u go be opposition? to stand up and voice all this out to the open public, to the masses. what u all say makes sense, but no point saying them here since it is within a confined audience.
