I notice that advertisements in the Straits Times do not have Chinese New Year greetings, whether in English or Hanyu Pinyin.
I wonder why? -

I noted the mood for CNY this year, is MUTED.
I think everyone is feeling apprehensive....about how this year will pan out. -
OK here's my take on this:
For it to so complete that no one advertises during this Lunar New Year like they did last year means that there is a directive. From the top, to the advertisement watchdog, to the advertising firms.
They are just to advertise, just inform the public of their offers. Do not greet. Do not like a few months ago, where advertisers wish patrons, customers, the public a Merry Christmas and a Happy Happy New Year.
I think because of the current global tide of religious extremeism, there was (in western countries of) some unhappiness of these greeting. So the powers that be in Singapore, decide to be politically correct and prohibit the greetings in newspapers here. After all not everyone in Singapore is Chinese. The non-Chinese should not be imposed upon with the Chinese New Year greetings.
I wonder if this new year zodiac sign, the Pig has some bearing on this directive.
I guess from now on all ethnic festivals would be confined within the particular community. Deepavali, Hari Raya, Christmas and other festivals would come and go, to be celebrated only within the respective community. The other ethnic community should not be inconvenienced.
Curiously, I heard only one Gong Xi Fa Cai this CNY season. It is from Rowan Atkins, Mr. Bean.
Well if Mr. Bean can wish all Singaporeans "Gong Xi Fa Cai", so can I.

I've also noticed the media has started using the word 'Lunar New Year' instead of 'Chinese New Year'...perhaps it has got to do with sounding less racial or something?

Maybe they are just plain lazy.

once ppl hear abt the forcoming 7% GST, everyone's mood wont be surely that good naturally...

The point is not the peoples' mood, the point is why no ushering in of the Chinese New Year.
Like for Christmas, in middle of November we will start hearing Christmas carols, and Christmas theme advertisement will begin to appear in newspapers. The songs played over and over again, build up the expectation of the comming festivities or holiday for everyone, even those who do not celebrate Christmas.
Why was Christmas herald in? Even with the comming 7% hike.
Why Chinese New Year was not ushered in? Where are the traditional CNY songs played ad nauseum, the clashing of cymbals and drums, and the "Gong Xi Fa Cai" over TV and radio? Why newspapers, TV no new year motif?
This resulted in the mood not built up, therefore the muted CNY celebrations.
If this could happen to the Chinese, then this could also happen to the Indians, and Malays and Others. Cannot Huat Huat and not bother. That's why I post this thead in Politics.
Did the government has a hand in this?
