You do not seriously think that if Singapore did not have a credible military force, other countries in the region would not think twice about messing around with the little red dot? Just look a little into our history and you will realize how many times we came quite close to the edge, and back then NS didn't strike people as a bad idea at all.
I think any serious thinker here will realize that as much as it is not a nice thing, NS serves a very vital role for the stability and survival of Singapore. -

dont you realize our military strategy is not to sit back and let others attack our country, because by then you can assume that singapore is lost. well ... the rantings aside ...
this is certainly something the goverment need to address ... I'm all for ideals and the burdens of citizenship, but there has to be a level playing field for Singaporean males as well ... and don't think that a few hundred dollars worth of NS bonus will make things even ... that just smacks of "here's a bone, so shut up already" ...
I remember a conversation I had with a malaysian poly classmate, way back in 1998 ... I asked him if he intended to get a job here, settle down here, and get a PR after graduation ...
his reply ? "sure, I'd want to get a job here, it's quite easy to get a job in Singapore, but PR ? ... siao ah ! ... I'd have to serve NS then ... I'll wait till I'm old enough that I won't get called up, then I'll apply for PR "

so the challenge is, how to level the playing field for men who've spent 1/5th (or for old birds like some of us, 1/4th) of our golden decade defending the country ? ... and go for reservists besides ? ...
well, here's a suggestion: Tax breaks for Singaporean men for the duration of their 10 year cycle ... if our NS liabilities are going to affect our employability, then at least even things out by taking less from us ... -
Yup and that is why many of us choose to migrate...its the most sensible thing to do.....no need for NS for our kids, so that they can get a headstart in life...
I say freedom of choice for those who choose to leave....those who choose to stay, that's your choice and no one is stopping the stayers...you will just have to work harder to compete with us foreign FTs while you do your RTs and IPPTs.....
Best part is when you migrate and work even harder in another country, you get to withdraw all your CPF....just to balanced and be fair to the stayers...its not going to be easy overseas either but as long as you work hard and be street smart, you will survive -

I'd say to those who have the means, quit Sillypore and migrate like what many of us have done...its a free country afterall. I am sure there will be new generations of migrants whose children are willing to take up arms to defend their new country....
NS....just my personal opinion...have served NS and I think it cannot be defended....I just took it in the right spirit and built up my muscles, tested my endurance to see how far I can go physically...that's it...nothing more

In our estate 80% of PRC nationals r renting their house and stayed with 8 to 10 persons per unit and paid a rental of S$150 to S$200 each,most of them r professionals earing a salary of S$1000 to S$2000 per month,after they had made their days in Sinkgapore,they left for their own country w/o any obligations .and our young one has to serve NS and RS which taking away how much of their precious working time and yet we had been sucking so much blood like nothing to this stupig Sg gov!!!!
We had decided to leave this country asap!!!! -

Just calmly reply him, that all healthy males need to serve NS, thus have reservist, if he want any males that does not have NS - not that health, then he may get more sick leave which make up the same also lower performance. As for ladies, well yes they do not have to go back to NS, but they have other leave like materity leave , so the way you see it , it is just a matter of prospective of views .... !!! tell him that, think he will accept that it is not a disadvantage . -
