i dun think there is such a clear cut black or white, right or wrong....rich or poor for the matter.
if you want to define `class' of people by income strata, clearly there is a mid-range strata that would classify as middle class.
The middle class, in my mind exist in Singapore. In my definition, they are the chumps who:
1. are in 2 minds about voting for PAP bcos the latter heck care about their well being. PAP enrich the rich (inner circle) and help the very poor (vote buying). If you feel your are being ignored, in policy matters or felt irrelevant in matters affecting nation building, you are middle class.
2. hog SG roads with toyota altis'and nissan sunnys...
3. have a relatively steady job but with little prospects on career advancement on merit. you constantly feel that you are being pass over for any job promotion and feel insecure about having FTs competing for the same job or taking your job away.
4. stays in 99 year leasehold condo nestled in hdb estates to get out of that `I stay in HDB' stigma
5. feels the pinch when you get $30 parking fine, grumble when petrol pump price goes up 15 cents/litre.
6. finds yourself staring briefly at that S Class or 5 series at the traffic sign stop and tell yourself you will `get there' one day.
If you are 4 or more of the above, you are middle class. And that's nothing to be ashamed of. It is not your undoing.....
