  The Companies managed by the "exceptional" family was once the subject of an article entitled Why it might be difficult for the government to withdraw from business - by Tan Boon Seng in 2002.
  
  That piece is already five years old, and a few characters have been replaced, while others close to the center of power remains even more entrenched.
