I buy the arguments for the campaign against plastic bags.
If the issue is that plastic bags are non-biodegradable, then Green activists should get the supermarkets to convert to paper bags or some biodegradable plastic bag. Most Singaporeans shoppers don't drive and don't carry a big bag with them most of the time. And all they need from the shops is something to hold their purchases.
The present situation of charging (through donation or other means) for plastic bags overprices the bags. They certainly don't cost 10 cents per piece. Shops will have a reason to hide behind the cover of going Green and overcharge for the bags.
Beyond the economic impact, I think Singapore is blindly following the West on discouraging the use of plastic bags. We incinerate our rubbish so it doesn't really matter whether the bags are biodegradable. We don't have much wildlife to protect from plastic bags. What is more relevant to Singapore is to reduce energy consumption. For example, a campaign to discourage the use of air-cons perhaps. -

Everyday I throw away one plastic bag, it contains my kitchen garbage.
But I bring back home a number of plastic bags daily.
Because every purchase I make comes with a plastic bag.
Therefore I accumulate plastic bags faster than I can use it.
Now I decline plastic bags where I can.
I accept the first plastic bag, of course, and then decline the subsequent bags, as that bag can hold the subsequent purchases.
Long time ago, in the office, I realised that plastic bag have a very short life. Lunch time I buy an item, it is put into a plastic bag, I return to office, and the plastic bag becomes garbage. Time span, <10 minutes. And realise the wastefulness of it when I think of the process that it took to produce that plastic bag: The petrochemical machinery, the packaging, the transportation, the wholesale, the retail, and it is used for less than 10 minutes to carry an item for less than 100m. What a waste.
Waste not, want not.
The benefit of not wasting will slowly, but surely, come upon us in many ways.
We will not immediately feel it, we may not even realise it, but surely resourses redirected to more useful purposes, less polutants in the enviroment, will be good for us. -

Since the donation to National Environment Council for getting plastic is voluntary,the Bring Your Own Bag day can be held every Wednesday or at least once every fornightly.What do u think?
