What happen to Changi Airport

She used to be our pride and joy, but it has fallen out from the top spot. We need to keep her at the top spot as she is the first image we give to all visitors.
Intermediate refurbishing just does not work; she is not a HDB flat where upgrading is just find. Changi Airport is like a small city in itself and like all major tourist attraction, she needs major overhaul (instead of upgrading) and she constantly needs to reinvent itself totally to be at the top.
Ideas of major over haul;
1) Rebuilt control tower to 500 meters (tallest in the world)
2) First duty free Casino in the world, for all transit passengers
3) Re paint the whole airport into bright yellow, pink or red (instead of the normal grey like all airports in the world)
4) Put in the largest shopping centre in an airport in the world
For years CAAS has tried many things in Changi Airport, but all the projects are very small in scale compare to those globally, may be CAAS can be more daring and less worried about their iron rice bowl then something truely special can be done to Changi Airport. -

If Changi Airport needs an overhaul, might as well change some Pulau into an airport like what Hong Kong did. Or, build an floating island like what Japan did with the Kansai Airport.
Maybe let's a combination of both. Have a floating runway and convert a certain Pulau into an airport island. How about Tekong? -
compared to KLIA... Changi International like claustrophobic... I think because they try to add in as many "money-making" outlets as possible...

Might be all the construction work. Last I was there, lots was still going on.
Then add to the fact that shops there are kinda.. not engaging. They need to revamp the shopping scene a little. -

agreed that it is always difficult to compete with brand new airports, but if this is the case, every year there is brand new airports around the world, thus new airports cannot hold title for long.
Thus this reason cannot be the excuse as Changi hold many titles for many years, it takes both management and physical appearance to top the charts, thus i feel age has cuaght up with Changi and something should be done to her, not just cosmetic "up grading" or "refurbishing" but a metamohosis of some kind to bring it ten years ahead of the competition again.
Hope the new Minister for transport, LTA and CAAS can take up this challenge. -

as if the tourists or businessmen are going to stop coming if Changi stops being #1??

IMO Changi Airport is still the best, most practical and comfortable airport in the world. We might not have the size of KLIA or Dubai International, but we definitely have an airport where people enjoy shopping, killing time and have a good rest waiting for transit flight. And not forgeting one of the best smoking area.
when T3 opens next year, I am sure we will climb back to the top. -
changi isn't as pleasing as narita airport.
the 1 thing i hated most about changi was that the moment you entered, everything had a hue of yellow. -
Not been to Sooo many airport that I could say is Changi the best or not. Not even been to the new KL airport. But the new HK one when I was there felt too big. Walk like hell from the check-in to the flight gate. Nothing much to see also. Could be that at the time, the airport still new and not much shopping.... some years back.
T1 is getting old..... so agree that it could be better. Maybe more upgrade on the way....
T2 of best lah....... got a mid size Koi pond under wooden brigde inside a man made garden..... all inside T2 itself

i dun know abt incheon overall but the kris flyer lounge there is da best! many pc terminals for you to surf net and chck sg.forums....food selection by far the best so far and even got individual beds in small rooms if you want to catch 40 winks there. walking to the gates is often a short distance away, and the sq babes manning the counter also pretty...
my favourite airport overall is actually a toss between KLIA and the Auckland one. Changi, ok lah, efficient and predictable... -

greeneries within/inside the terminal buildings, wide open spaces (as opposed to the cramp surrounding in Changi; which tries to have everything there). nice mix of shops and there's a pizza joint on the 2nd flr (can't remember the name which is a franchise from the US) which serves good pizza. and proximity to the F1 venue.Originally posted by Gazelle:What do you like about KLIA?
