6 mth pregnant friend sick, Boss dun let her take MC

Friend of mine, who's 6 mths pregnant, is working at an MNC as HR admin. Ang moh boss. She started having bad stomach pains this morning & went to see a doc, who confirmed it is food poisoning. Doc gave her an MC & ordered her to go home to rest right away, but she is afraid her boss will show his unhappiness. She's afraid to lose her job.
She doesn't take MC often and does her job well (i've worked with her before), but her boss has apparently expressed alot of unhappiness abt her recent ML (medical leave) for those pregnancy checkups. He already refused to let her take MC a mth back when she was sick + pregnant.
This isn't a clear-cut discrimination case because there's no hard evidence.. Want to help but don't know how to. Argh. So much for the shiny govt statistics. Worse, she's stuck with this job at least till she gives birth.
Anyone came across these cases before / able to offer insight on how to handle these situations? -

There are more then 100,000 new jobs created in 2006 (reported by gov)
Baby more important, so quite and find a new one. Maybe pay or welfare will be better then existing one -

actually i won't be happy if my employee goes off often for medicals or what not often too.
i can understand its cos of the pregnancy and what not and empathize. but in the end,it still affects the work and productivity..............

depends on the job scope i guess and there is the fact that you have to assign the task to other pple for the day or wait till shes back to pass the task to her. which is also some delay and inconvenience.Originally posted by spinsugar:That's depressing. thats in adddition to daily tasks that would be left undone for that day or some one else has to do it.

this is WHY singaporean women are unwilling to have babies, because of selfish boss and screwed up management.
and singaporeans are at fault too. i would rather someone would is more than 5 or 6 months preganant to go on leave and find a temporary replacement. this is stupid, and all these happens because of MONEY. boss buay song because still have to pay the woman money if she is on pregnancy leave or MC, and affecting productivity. den women also buay song because if she take no pay leave or dun work, den she no income, which means, NO MONEY.

Your friend should just absent herself from work anyway to go consult a doctor. Make sure that at the end of the medical consultation, the doctor issues an mc to at least cover the day of the consultation and thus her absence from work. If the company's HR does not recognise the medical leave, bring the matter up to the Ministry of Manpower. The Employment Act specifically provides that each employee should have the entitlement of at last a certain number of days of medical leave.
Ang Moh boss so wad?! Ang Moh countries always kpkb about human rights. Yet, visiting a doctor for treatment is not meh? Such hypocrisy!!!

Want to help her? Go tell the Ang Moh boss that you will go speak to the Straits Times, Channel News Asia, Mediacorp News about this matter.
Ang Moh and their double standards must be exposed!!! But you must be prepared to go look for another job lor cos even if you are not terminated, he might give you hell after this......... And if he does, go complain to the Ministry of Manpower! The Ang Moh boss will be finished!!! 
If you don't stand up for your friend and yourself for justice, who will?

She already went to see a doc - diagnosed as food poisoning.
Already got MC.
Her boss has denied her medical leave despite MC before. She is afraid to show him the MC now for fear of him scolding her / expressing unhappiness.
She says this is her 2nd MC this year, last was in early Jan (not incl 1 advance medical leave applied for pregnancy appointment) -
There are always two sides to a story, and all we have here is yours.
Most Ang Mohs are upfront and frank. But most are also fair. There are always reasons why bosses reject excuses for failing to turn up at work, but a valid MC is not one of them.
If your friend has been issued a valid MC and the boss still rejects her application to be absent, MOM can certainly take action against this company.
Alternatively, if your friend frequently gets sick or takes any opportunity to get MCs, then surely the boss is well within his right to suspect yet another dubious attempt at getting off the hook. -
If she has legit MC that covers the required day(s), then just use it. Upon return to work just make sure her duties are properly carried out .

Yeah her boss's only reason (if it is even considered one) is that she should wait for the big boss to come into the office at 4pm. As in, the ang moh manager's manager.
She just called me to tell me she puked her lunch out. She sounded sick, I don't think she's lying to me. If she is, it'd be a 1st.

IMO pregnancy is more important than a job. She should perform as best as she can at work, but if she needs rest she better take it. Better safe than sorry - it could be just food poisoning now but she won't know what the problem is next time.
