The only really valuable resource I can think of in Singapore is her human resource. We are apparently better educated, have more opportunities and have the technology to pursue our talent compared to our neighbours. But we have no oil, rubber, farms (very few), sheep, cattle, and even water!
Even if we as people are more superior, we all see our neighbours opening up and trying to "catch-up" with Singapore (and the rest of the world). Such countries include China, Malaysia and Vietnam.
When they catch up in terms of human resource, what else are we left with? Many MNCs will be moving their asia head quarters elsewhere because of cheaper labour costs and space.
One good example is the PTP (Port of Tanjung Palapas - I think that's what it's called) stealing a major client from PSA (this is a while back already).
In time to come, if Singapore doesn't find another competitive edge, it will start to sink.

but when will sg return, that's another qns altogether, we can only see how the polical structure now can hold sg'reans together longer, and hold the country together for how long...

If u wanna go that far back, why don't u say that Thailand has a claim to Malaysia? Or Indonesia has a claim to the entire archipelago since Majapahit supposedly included Malaysia as well... Or that China has a claim all the way up to Africa since their rulers paid homage to the Ming emperor!
In the same breath, why not tell the Americans that the Brits have a righful claim to the original 14 colonies on the east coast... and the French have a claim to Louisiana =P

In case i haven't made my position clear enough in my previous message, let me just say this:
I find the very idea of a re-merger offensive. And lets not have the usual megalomaniacal anschluss scenario... simply not gonna happen.
But i think that ASEAN can probably come closer to becoming a supra-national authority like the EU... now THAT will be something else, amalgamation within an already existing framework and NOT annexation through any armed or political means...
Already we can see different countries jostling for positions of influence and responsibilities, such as our Northern friend's proposal to set up a separate secreteriat in K.L for dealing with Korea and Japan... as if that could not be achieved with the current base in Jakarta... why would they want this if not to acquire more leverage and influence in determining the future direction of ASEAN?
S.E Asia is in many ways, one big economic bloc. I see no reason why the organisation cannot grow bigger, stronger and more influential... -

and before i forget, as to what joho mentioned, it is a sad but true fact. once malaysia and indonesia and our other neighbours with more natural and human resources than us get their shit together, we may not stand much of a chance.
i think we're at present, just living on borrowed time - the headstart we have had over our neighbours due to great leaders like LKY (hate him as much as we want, he did bring singapore to what it is today), isn't going to last forever.
unless we think of something really good or our neighbours continue to be plagued by civil unrest, political problems and what-have-you, its only a matter of time before they overtake us. most of us may not live to see it in our lifetimes, but it is quite inevitable as far as i'm concerned. -

Narrowly speaking, if u think about it, Malaysia really doesn't have THAT much to offer. Cheap land and cheap labour are their main offerings. Its stuff Sg doesn't WANT to provide anymore... palm oil, tin and rubber are low value products... they do not add significant amounts to the GDP and GNP...
Sure, they're growing, and catching up... big deal... they were bound to do so sooner or later... its pointless to beggar thy neighbour for selfish reasons. Adam Smith started the ball rolling when he wrote an inquiry into the wealth of nations and its about time people found out about the ruthless nature of free market economics.
So find the opportunities that emerging markets offer and find your future instead of lamenting the inevitable!
And number one is merely symbolic. You don't have to be number one to make a comfortable living. Besides, the only people benefitting from the number one lables are the GLCs anyway. Who gives a crap?

i didn't mean to say i think malaysia coming under singapore's government was likely to happen. i myself think that is quite unlikely.
as for how singapore may find other resources to help it survive, i think its quite hard for anyone, myself included, to predict what will happen. just that things are looking a bit bleak at the moment i think, so maybe everyone's being a bit pessimistic.
