Saw this on a blog. Quite true....
Mindboggling numbers, mindboggling salaries
Just wanted to add this - to put things in perspective.
You see, each term of parliament is 5 years, until parliament is dissolved for the next elections. So, it is quite right to say that each minister sits for a term of 5 years. Now, lets do some simple calculations, since most of us are just ordinary, non-elite laymen/women.
Say, minister AÂ’s salary is increased from $1.2m to $2.2 million per year.
He sits for 5 years.
Simple maths: $2.2m X 5 = $11 million.
In one term, minister A gets $11 million.
How many minister do we have in the govt? Lets take a peek at the govt website. We have 18 full ministers and I assume (as far as I can make out) we have 14 ministers of state.
That makes it 32 ministers altogether.
Lets say each has an average of just $2 million. (Some like MM, SM & PM may have higher and some lower. So lets average it out at $2mil a piece.)
That will give you: 32 X $2m = $64 mil
$64 million for 32 ministers for one year.
That’s double the amount in the 90s when Goh Chok Tong famously declared that his govt was cheap at only $34 mil, or “5 plates of char kway teow”.
But look again! ThatÂ’s just for one term! How much for a 5 year term for all these 32 ministers?
Simple maths again: (32 X $2m) X 5 =Â…Â…Â…Â…Â…Â…
$320 million!
Let me repeat:
$320,000,000.00
So, you can roughly imagine how much a minister who sits for 4, 5 terms have received or will receive.
*The above is a rough estimate, of course. But stillÂ…mindbogglingÂ….. No where else on the planetÂ…Â… or in the universeÂ…Â…. And oh, how much are they giving to our old and elderly on public assistance?
Oh yesÂ….
$290.00 per month.
