The recent proposal to increase Ministerial and Administrative Officers pay has drawn the usual criticisms about justification of such increases.
From my perspective, the criticisms are not much different from what I hear of my profession.
I am a litigation lawyer in private practice and every now and then I get comments from clients, friends and the like who are wont to say:
“Lawyers, Wah! One letter and you charge hundreds of dollars!”
“Lawyers, talking only can charge so much money!”
“So easy thing you Lawyers do and can make so much money! Good ah!”
“Don’t need to charge so much, ah! My case very easy lah- only write some letters, ah!”
Well, the very easy response that I have is- if itÂ’s so easy, please do it yourself.
The simple fact is that ours is a specialized profession. We have to study for long hours in the University for 4 years, attend post-graduate courses and undergo pupilage. It takes years of training as a Legal Assistant to stand on your own and conduct cases. This is one of the reasons why there are so few of us out there and why so many young lawyers leave the profession.
We deserve what we earn because every piece of work that we do is done after careful consideration of all possible permutations that are favourable or adverse to our clients. We can do what very few people can. If our services are all that simple, then it is a matter of our clients representing themselves in person. (Which of course they do not because they cannot.)
But more fundamentally, underlying all these comments is the green eyed monster. People just see the money being made (or rather being perceived to being made) by lawyers and belittle us and our efforts due to envy.
Which is why I have a lot of empathy for our Ministers. They do a job that very few people can do and they deserve to be paid accordingly. The question to be asked by the critics of their proposed pay increase is this- are you criticizing because you honestly do not believe that the Ministers are entitled to a pay increase or is it because you are simply envious? -

I only pity those people who're old and work long hours under the hot sun and during the midnights to collect cans, cardboards, etc.......
Long hours? Physically stress? Mentally stress? But no pay rise leh....an zua gong?
Already living big houses, drive luxury cars, peanut salaries, but got pay rise leh.... -
Actually, i agreed with everything he wrote in his article...EXCEPT the last paragraph.
Evidently, even a lawyer falls victim to confusion. He has foolishly tied a private sector specialization to a government sector job.
Not an apple to apple comparison. Where's the misplaced empathy?

Do it yourself? Has this guy been living on Mars, or is he completely oblivious to the fact that Singaporeans aren't given the option to do it themselves in this closed-shop one-party system?
Yet another goldfish. I'd like to see him try and make it in the real world where a PAP membership means sweet f*ck-all. -
Lawyer is a profession.
Depending on the gravity of each individual case which transit to the time-cost factor with your lawyer is price at a reasonable market rate.

As far as I'm concern, the overblown pay check these ministers get is similar to being legally bribed by the government, so when the rooster say north, all the chickens follow. We are serving the country rite? Or are we serving our own self interests? Seeing how some of the poorer people, (hello please open your eyes there are still people sleeping in the streets despite your continous efforts to imprison them in sheltered homes!!!), or not to mentioned the few comrades who had to resort to jumping mrts and commiting suicides, will you PAPs please have a conscience? Even the president of USA don't get paid as much as our ministers, and if you guys are so proud of your salary, things should be more transparent, why are you guys so scared about publishing your salaries? afraid of having backlash? Please stop saying you guys deserve it, because you think you do, but you don't. I've served NS before, and I've PERSONALLY seen how these civil servants work! -
Not every lawyer gets million dollars salaries... their income is actually uncertain... unlike Ministers with guaranteed salaries... one million two hundred dollars of guaranteed salaries from a pay master that can print money to pay them and they want more?
Worse part is that they raise GST - collect from the poor to finance their pay rise.

thereÂ’re many talented patriots in singapore who do not want to step into politics because they know of the danger of opposing the PAP government.
jus look at the ministers. all of them are friends, families, familyÂ’s friendsÂ…related in one way or another.
wan to be a minister? be a PAP. but our talents dun wan to be PAP.
i can see more young people like me are aware of this dictatorship by the PAP. the WP looks promising and i am sure they can take over the PAP in 4 yrs time.
when the PAP is gone, ministers pay shall be levied back to 1.2million. those not happy can leave for the private sector all they want. the real talents will rise and replace them.
p.s. ur right about one thing though: iÂ’m envious of everyoneÂ’s pay, for the fact that iÂ’m only 19 yrs old now lol. -

the letter leaks more of the writers 'self praise' nothing more... but he/she has got a very good potential to be in the pom-pom team in future.. because thats what they will need in future parliament 'debates' .. more cheerleaders..

Raising civil service salaries is fine with me, but it just doesn't go down well with the crowd nearly right after the budget was announced with a confirmed 2 point gst increase.

Have you read the rest of the articles on the blog? They are pretty amazing.
I mean I understand that naturally you ought to root for your own side, but the way they go about it speaks volumes about what they think about themselves.
I like this one idea in one of their posts:
"Singapore is PAP, PAP is Singapore"
As if it was something to be really proud of... speaks volumes of the mindset.
And of course, one dude commenting that even though they are taxpayers, the people in Hougang should be penalized by having their needs put lower on the list because they didn't vote in the PAP.
Quite amazing views... it was a disturbing read. -
Jealous? It is jealousy that they should be worring about. If people start looking at their state and seeing them slotted in their glory, high above the pedestal, and start being jealous, it is exactly these feelings that will breed social disequlibrium.

Well if u guys visualise our GDP is much lower than USA however our ministers are paid with better salaries wat can u decifer from this? our ministers are not as talented as US but they are getting better salaries? actually i dun really think that paying the ministers such high pay is gd.... however i got to agree that paying the minister higher pay can help in anti-corruption campaigns too
