Myanmar has offered to be a long-term supplier of sand, cement, granite and other construction materials to Singapore, a move that will help to ease the shortage of these items in the building industry here.
Myanmar's Lieutenant-General Thein Sein,First Secretary of Myanmar's ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), made this suggestion yesterday to Foreign Minister George Yeo who called on him in Naypyidaw, the country's new capital. Mr Yeo is on a three-day official visit to Myanmar.
Lt-Gen Thein Sein's offer comes amid a sharp spike in the prices of sand and granite in Singapore, following Indonesia's ban on exports of land sand in February and recent disruptions of shipments of Indonesian granite.
At the meeting Lt-Gen Thein Sein also told Mr Yeo that Myanmar encourages more Singapore companies to invest in his country. Mr Yeo was also updated on the domestic developments in Myanmar, specifically its national reconciliation and economic development efforts.
Longstanding bilateral relations were reaffirmed, with the two leaders exchanging views on forging closer ties, especially in the area of trade and investment. Mr Yeo also conveyed an invitation to the SPDC chairman, Senior General Than Shwe, to visit Singapore from President S R Nathan. -
