I can see them playing the resources card again and again in the future ... what's next ? ... natural gas ? ... maids ? ....

It was reported over Channelnews Asia on Monday night.
The Agreement for Extradition seems to be tied to our need for Defense Co-operation Agreement with Indonesia.
We will have to see how much of our needs were met in the Defense Agreement - considering that Singapore wanted a long term certainty of some 25 years to protect our investments in the defense facilities built on Indonesian soil that are also offered to the Indonesia Military too.
The certainly to this bilateral agreement will be that sand and granite prices will be back to some level of sanity, and hopefully the costs of HDB flats will not be jacked up due to the short period of insane price levels as a result of the exports restrictions.
Was the threshold of pain reached before the hard positions were softened ?
We should query our government for the hardball position during the negotiations that has taken so long to conclude, and putting Singapore into this unnecessary political and economic jeopardy that expose our weak flanks.
Why will this Government attempt this hardball position when it is common knowlege that the inept and known corrupt judiciary system in Indonesia will negate and mess up any purposeful persecution attempt towards any Indonesian individual taking refuge here ? -
why do we need to train in Indonesia in the first place?
if its land and airspace, we can approach more reliable neighbours.

surely we are not paying top dollar for this group of extraordinary talents just to 'surrender' to the indons!! after playing hardball with everyone, they've finally succumbed to hard tactics, now others will learn the 'diplomatic' way to deal with their arrogance....really sad...

actually, i would not be so quick jump onto the "indonesia is corrupt" bandwagon...
now they are trying to clean up their act.. and what do we do? are we so cynical that we scoff at any of their efforts?
basically, with this extradition treaty, i would look at this: those who have gotten away with their ill-gotten gains in Indonesia, hiding here in Singapore enjoying their loot.. beware...
now.. why our gabrament stonewalled them, who knows?

Indonesian newspapers zoom in on extradition treaty

JAKARTA - INDONESIAN newspapers yesterday gave prominent coverage to the agreement on the extradition and defence treaties with Singapore that will be signed in Bali tomorrow.
All newspapers carried the story on their front pages but focused mostly on the extradition treaty rather than the defence pact.
Extraditing Indonesian fugitives said to be hiding in Singapore was the main focus of all the reports.
Afternoon daily Sinar Harapan, while welcoming the treaties, cautioned that they still needed to be ratified by the parliaments of both countries.
International law expert Hikmah Hanto told the daily that there would be a time lag before the extradition treaty came into effect.
'Hence while we are busy ratifying the treaty, the fugitives wanted for committing corruption would have time to pack up and leave Singapore. We will not be able to extradite them here,' he said.
According to him, Singapore did not have much interest in the extradition treaty.
'It's Indonesia which wants it so much because many Indonesians found guilty of corruption are hiding in Singapore,' he said. -

If you don't let them park their cash here, they will just move to Macao, Guam etc. So with this Treaty, we shoot ourselves in the leg......or balls......... when they leave with their cash. Our economy would be affected....
