It can take about 10,000 people and more than 200 tonnes of equipment on board. The estimated cost is $1.5 million.
Fittingly, the floating platform will be used for two areas under Mr Teo's purview: Defence and Sports. After the 2007 NDP, the floating field will be handed over to the Singapore Sports Council for use as a temporary stadium.
Said Mr Teo, "I think it will offer many interesting opportunities for creative ideas for the NDP."

Why can't padang be used for the event?? How about Jalan Besar stadium or serangoon stadium ? Die die Mindef must award $1.5 millions contract to DSTA/sembcorb marine shipyard to build.
Even NSmen from Combat Engineering are 'seen' in the unveiling the platform according to mouthpiece today.
What's the rationale here, spending est $1,500,000/-, which create more works for NSmen, used as temp stadium , then 5 yrs later then dismantle.
What military application/value since designed by DSTA? Its not even cutting edge technology -

They are doing this for the ordinary folks that wants to take part in the NDP, especially watching the fireworks display. Personally I dont see it as wasting tax payer's money because this event will bring joy and fun to many people.
Furthermore, I think it is a good decision to do somethin of this sort because this platform can also be use as jetty for other water sports events. -

Hhhmm....from the pictures I've seen in the papers, it doesn't seem that you'd get a good view if your seat happens to be at the top few rows. Also, it is not clear how good audience participation and satisfaction would be when the constraints of a waterfront location prevent the seats from enveloping the entire platform as you would usually expect in a stadium.

Joy and fun? If that's what it's about, they wouldn't tear down The Padang.
It's ridiculous how we splurge so blindly on new, obscenely priced add-ons, yet destroy our own joy and heritage.. like the Padang! Frickin'.. the 1st NDP was held there!
Save the Padang, man... sheeesh.. I guarantee it won't cost even a peanut ($600,000) to preserve this treasure we already have! -
another poorly advised, desperate move to have another so-called `iconic structure' in uniqLEE sinkapore......
one can only imagine how impractical it is for the performers to work around the sea-confined `stage'. so many limitations. also, it is at the mercy of weather. who in the right mind would dare to book that venue given the unpredictable weather.
an eyesore and a waste of taxpayers money. it is also scheduled to be torn down after the new sports hub is ready.
for sang nila utama sake, can the gahmen cut all these excesses... -
Normally,Mindef doesnt spent money built something just for one purpose.The floating pontoons not only serves as events platform,but i believe it is more useful during wartime.
Didnt any of us notice the combat engineer can assemble the pontoons in very short time?
We general public should not come to our own conclusion so fast.

sad to see sg uses fireworks as some sacred item when countries everywhere are so lenient on its use. In HK fireworks are shot every night in the city and in Disneyland -
