Imagine if instead of building a lift to carry things from 1st to 50th floor, you use an entire chain of NS men to carry things by hand up the 50 floors and you only need to pay them a fraction of peanuts. Which one is cheaper and which one will you use? -

When they pay the contractors or developers 1.5mil to build this White Elephant, they will have probably made back half or more of it from the contractors and or developers by the time it is completed... -
Normally,Mindef doesnt spent money built something just for one purpose.The floating pontoons not only serves as events platform,but i believe it is more useful during wartime.
Didnt any of us notice the combat engineer can assemble the pontoons in very short time?
We general public should not come to our own conclusion so fast.

i hope our minister can think of a better idea to justify their million dollar salary.

I heard about this floating platform a few months ago. Initially, I was skeptic about it. What's the use of building it only to dismantle that platform after the NDP? I agree totally with matleep's post above. This floating platform is the world's first and largest flating stage and it will attract lots of attention and activities, and in turn generate lots of extra revenue, job opportunites, increased tourism etc. Who says it's only meant for NDP? So many other kinds of creative ideas can be carried out on this largest floating stage in the world! Oh, and by the way, who says it will be dismantled after 5 years? It was only reported that the next 5 years of NDP will be held there. Nothing was said about demolishing the platform after 5 years.
And regarding matleep's last point, you guys just dont understand how precious, important and useful these floating platforms are for the combat engineers. Portable bridges is the key idea. Why did DSTA design the platform in many easy-to-assemble and dismantle pieces? Just because it can be turned into a temporary bridge or other floating platforms in times of war.
I know many of you will still have your own negative views regarding this new floating stage, and of course you are entitled to your own views, but please do seriously give a thought about the whole issue before making irresponsible comments. -

The issue is not whether it can be used as a water sports venue or not, sure it can!
The issue is why the is the money coming from Mindef for the purpose of sports. Mindef money should be used strictly for defence wat. If not why have different ministries?
Public funds should be spent in a more sensitive manner. -

you are right. coz not everyone NS serve in combat engineer. maybe we can get some combat engineer to inform us how good it serve our army come wartime. i mean practically usage in our terrain, geographical location. seriously. maybe the US army should get one from us as well.

I think $1.5 million is only the estimated cost. I don't think it's that cheap. But the speed at which they put up the structure including the spectator stand is really fast, super efficient. They better make sure it's be fully utilised, like for outdoor concerts, F1 Power Boat, and other performances, and not just for the "dragged to one month long" propaganda parade.

What so big deal about spending 1.5 million on the floating platform
Would u ppl rather see the 1.5 going into the Minster pay rise
I would rather have a floating 'White Elephant' any day of the year, then some minster getting more money. At least the platform will still be there when i go to see it.
