Wow, talk about a total reality disconnect.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Or perhaps many are happy with the disciplined, regulated society that has brought us from the third world to the first. Perhaps there are more voters who agree with the government than with you. Perhaps more voters prefer counting the cash in their banks to listening to CSJ ranting at street corners? Ever wondered what happened to Speaker's Corner? Perhaps most voters consider valuable what you dismiss as worthless and rubbish your idea of press freedom?
that's so short-term.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:We'll see... at the next elections![]()
If that is really true, has he ever explained why there is a decline in the winning votes for the ruling party for the last 2 elections.Originally posted by Rock^Star:I think LKY was questioned before on the alarming numbers of walkovers during elections and his reply was: "Singaporeans are happy with our governance, that's why".
Is that really true? I beg to differ.
Anyway, no media will report to their citizens, "Our media is one of the nost fxxed up in the world! Rejoice!" Credibility will drop tremendously, or if they have any to speak of.
Hope to see you in here, talking like you do, when they eventually lose...Originally posted by oxford mushroom:We'll see... at the next elections![]()

Last I checked, our great system bent over somewhat for the FTA, passing some rathe ridiculus half hearted measures in the process. So much for us being a sovereign nation not needing to formulate our policies according to the wishes of some Yankies.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:What a joke! Since when does a sovereign nation have to formulate its policies according to the wishes of the western liberal press? Perhaps some fossilized relics of the Juraissic period is trying to push us back into the clutches of the colonialists.

Singapore should be governed by Singaporeans and if the majority believes in a regulated press, that is right for us. With 82 out of 84 seats won by the ruling party, I would say that is a huge majority.
If you support the Opposition, for goodness sake at least try to put up a candidate to contest every ward at the next elections. Give the ruling party some proper competition instead of simply folding up and die at each elections![]()
Not say I want to say you leh, but want to insult at least learn to insult properly while you are at it.Hi.... just like to know..... Must one be able to spell properly before what he is trying to say 'got power'

Since when are the ideals of press freedom and transparent accountability limited to your "western liberals"? You are insulting fellow Asians by saying that we are not suitable for such values, and trapping the attitudes of the less educated into thinking that liberal values are evil.
Yes, Singapore should be governed by Singaporeans. But Singaporeans by and large have minimal impact on the crafting of government policy, so can you safely say; discounting the widely used flimsy excuse of having elections as a benchmark of a democracy, that the majority of Singaporeans want this current state of press standards, or is it much closer to the whims and fancies of a dominant ruling party that is NOT EXCLUSIVELY EQUATED to Singapore.
Your ball.![]()

Sorry.... me only C6 for english..... but even i know i could write here as long as others could understand me......
What values should be espoused by a society is the prerogative of the people, not foreign activists. As long as we the majority believe in keeping a regulated media, retaining the death penalty and outlawing practices we consider as undesirable, the laws of the land must reflect that view.Wow, suddenly the opinion of the Singaporean is so important to OM.
There was survey in yesterday sunday times talking about locals who look down on people who cant speaks good english, and also treating the white causasian better than other races. Adding words to your argument does not enhance it, you're just repeating what you've said instead of taking on my reasoning herein.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Haha...there is a Chinese saying, "Shi ren ya huei"..you are just picking up the morsels between the teeth of western liberals and passing them off as your own
Freedom comes with responsibility. There is no restriction on the press here provided one can support allegations with facts and provide a balanced political view. There are plenty of high quality editorial reviews that give both sides of the story in the Straits Times. Clowns like CSJ can be just as successfully prosecuted for defamation if he were to commit the offence in the UK as in Singapore. What the likes of CSJ want is not freedom, it's anarchy.

Who holds the majority view? The electorate has spoken once every 4 years but you reject that as reflecting the voice of the majority. But what better indication is there of the will of the people? Just because you say so or the wild rantings of some forumners?![]()

I think it it perfectly normal to be proud of who your are and where you are from, rather than trying to be different by sucking up to another race which you think is more superior than others.Originally posted by LazerLordz:and then there are those misguided fools who place Asians above everyone else as well.
you do not fight a wrong with another misguided volley.I'd expected more intellect from you.
That's fine, but when you place your own race above others, it's just as bad isn't it?Originally posted by Gazelle:I think it it perfectly normal to be proud of who your are and where you are from, rather than trying to be different by sucking up to another race which you think is more superior than others.
There is difference between being proud of your nationality vs being proud of your own race. Please get your facts right.Originally posted by LazerLordz:That's fine, but when you place your own race above others, it's just as bad isn't it?
Pride in your own race does not have to come at the expense of others. This world is shrinking, and we do not need more racialism.
