I doubt the need of MBTs in the region, and i see this purchase by Malaysia as a "show move". Any conflict in the region would be limited to built-up areas, and MBT capabilities are severely diminished in that environment. MBTs thrive in open desert or forest areas (Gulf war is a good example). They lack the speed and mobility required in FIBUA combat. Perhaps Malaysia plans to use them as "sentries", or to borrow a term someone used in a thread here, "point defence" duties, and that also restricts their capabilities.

because they're cheap (compared to western equipment) and they have no qualms who they sell to. of late, they've even thrown in tech transfer into the bargain... not a bad deal actually... and of course, they need the order so desperately that they're actually willing to take palm oil for partial payment

Correct me if I am wrong but the tanks that Russian uses are a few years behind western countries tanks and only few are battle proven.
Main Battle Tank are really not useful in the region even in the jungle region. Because of our humid environment, the ground tends to be very soft and cannot take heavy weight.
Do you know how many tanks and heavy vehicles I have seen bogging down in the exercise area or new vegetation. Therefore I think the best type of tank that is suitable for the region are those that are light, fast and pack heavy firepower.

Now that Malaysia have officially announced their purchase of MBTs and MLRS, would Singapore officially acknowlegde the existence of similar weopons in its inventory? What about putting them up for public display?

Just because our neighbours have them doesn't mean we have to reveal what we have as well. It will give the impression that Singapore is directly challenging its neighbours military strength, and it could also be misinterpreted by neighbouring countries as well. Do not totally agree that we should reveal what we have as it might allow the enemy an unfair unadvantage over us. As the saying goes "know the enemy know yourself, hundred battle fought, hundred battle won. Just imagine the look of surprise when the enemy encounter the weapons that they never know exist. Malaysia will received 48 T72M1Z (PT 91)sometime in 2003 -the deal also will include 14 support vehicles like AVLB and ARV.All together 62 initial units to equipped i tank regiment.Malaysia plans to have 3 tank regiments by 2005.
T72M1Z is the most modern tank in SEA.

Merkava mk 111-fat chance-Israeli wont sell that stuff even to the US .BTW a couple of months ago i saw on CNN -Mk 3 destroyed after being bombed by Palestinian.
Singapore with the M60 or the AMX 13 (gun on track)wont stand a chance against the PT91. -
