For me, its simple, I can't envision staying back to fight. Fight for what? For those ministers? For a country that is run more like a corporation? There is no love here, for this is just a piece of an island. There is no identity here.
We are an OPEN country, that local citizens and foreigners all enjoy the SAME benefits, but yet are treated differently (for eg. Local citizens must serve NS to protect this place while foreigners only get to enjoy the benefits)
This is what Gazelle said. He sees no need to protect Singaporeans from globalisation, and that everyone (regardless of race, language, religion, and NOW nationality) should enjoy the same opportunities.
So why should we give up our lives for a place who doesn't care about us?

I don't see the need to run now, since I can contribute to the economy now and I get my corresponding benefits at the same time. You can't do anything too, coz this is a country running like a corporation, and the CEOs value anyone for their ability to generate money more than the willingness to die for the country -

Which is more important?
1) The girl/wife that you love wholeheartedly with your life, and knowing that she will be devastated should you die?

Well, its fair enough. lots of ppl dont really understand the term of patriotism. We all seeking a comfortable place and wordly things. Sometimes it can be a hard choice , sometimes for the better of ur next generation u sacrifice urself for the greater good. Or live on now n think back that maybe u shouldve done something to change what is about to happen. Anyways maybe one day u will know what is real patriotism lo. I am more mercenary, coz at present, I am working hard to ensure I have a good living before considering other things. Yet I would like to one day be able to help fellow Singaporeans whom require help.

Of course you are unlucky if you were killed, but you are probably luckier than those who lose their legs and arms. I have no problem with people who want to migrate for a better life, they migrate so that their children don't have to learn chinese, don't have to tahan the pressure here, don't have to serve NS, don't like PAP...... But uproot yourself to start a new life somewhere during peace time, give up your citizenship, bring all the people who care for you with you, so that nobody will miss you here.
But doing that when war is imminent and if you have the responsibility to stay and fight, then you are running away from your responsibility as a citizen to help fellow singaporeans, your neighbours would have one man less to help in case the building is on fire, your platoon would have one man short whom yr commander might not find replacement in an emergency, your section mates would have to start building rapport with somebody new....you break the law, you betray the trust of your friends, neighbors and army comrades. They need you, probably only and especially during emergency, but you run away, at the critical moment. It is your wish, no doubt, but it is also right to describe such people as coward. Of course, if you never had such relationship with people around you, then when you leave nobody would miss you. It is rather sad, isn't it?
There are plenty of islands on this planet, big and small, but only here do I have my friends, my neighbours, my classmates, my golf partners, my coffee kake.....most, if not all of them would be around in Singapore, war or peace, run by pap or wp, at least in my generation. -

If Singapore is to go to war, the following will be the likely scenarios:
1) Being so small & without some "big brother" backing, Singapore be
be defeated easily
2) The PR, foreigners & rich Singaporeans will run away to some
safe countries - the pr & foreigners are here to make money while
the rich Singaporeans have tons of money to live for & they will never
die for Singapore
3) Ordinary folks like you & me will be left to face the
consequences - at the most we can run to Changi beach & try to
swim to the South China sea & in the process be a victim of a great

In another perspective, a man with a family may instead be the braver person to run to ensure his family doesn't get sacrificed in the war, and be labelled as a coward. He may run coz his wife loves him so much that she is prepared to kill herself if he dies.
It is your right to stay and fight. With your patriotic spirit, yes sure, I salute you. But there are many different aspects of life, and not everyone sees it in the same perspective as you. I also don't see patriotism as EQUALS to stay and fight. I think that is a very shallow and narrow way of viewing patriotism. -

You must accept the fact that friends come and go. There is rarely a friendship that does not change through time.
I have many friends, many good ones. Time has gone by, and we accept it that now, friendship takes 2nd priority, while family now takes centrestage.
I don't think its fair to label any of your friends who leave as cowards, coz everyone's entitled to their own lives and decisions. -

Even Lim Bo Seng and Force 136 ran away. They did not stay to be killed.

He was later caught and died after much tortures and imprisonment. A monument was built to remember him, with funds from HK.

I was just reiterating the point by soul_rage (though he might meant it in another way) - I also don't see patriotism as EQUALS to stay and fight. I think that is a very shallow and narrow way of viewing patriotism.
We can see this in the example of Force 136 and the 1st Malayan Regiment. One fled. One stayed.
Both are heroes deserving our respect.
So in the scenario of Singapore facing her first war, do you presume those who run away are cowards?
