Jealous of the Americans? How about Japanese part time workers get 1100 Yen per hour? About S$16 per hour.Originally posted by Shotgun:Wage, not age.
I was curious when I saw the bbc article that the US Congress had raised the minimum wage from USD $5.15 by $2.10. That would be $7.25 an hour.... minimum wage. That curiosity drove me to google up Singapore's legal minimum wage, only to discover that there is NO Legal minimum wage?
Doesn't this leave a loophole for exploitation to employ those who really really really need a job at a much lower wage? Some really big fast food joints operating locally are known to pay as low as $3 an hour. I mean, I'm really jealous of the americans now. Their minimum wage workers now earn TWICE of what Singaporean (controversially NON-Minimum wage ) workers, and in US Dollars.
Okay, maybe its no big deal for most of the new bunch of well educated Singaporeans. They probably won't become minimum wage workers here, and those who are minimum wage workers, can't possibly migrate to US and be minimum wage workers there.
I feel sorry for the poor aged aunties and uncles, so old already still working hard in fast food joints or supermarts. I wonder what kinda wage they receive and what kinda protection and benefits they have.
You do realise that having a job that barely meets one's needs is practically as good as not having the job whatsoever?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:The minimum wage is also often the maximum wage. Let market forces decide what is fair and equitable wages.

High rank ppl must be paid even higher to remain competitive
and the low rank ppl must be paid even lower to remain competitive
Minimum wage? That's taboo to a regime whose prosperity feeds on exploitation...Originally posted by Shotgun:Wage, not age.

Now you know why Jap workers work so late... part time workers get S$16 per hour...
In Singapore your wage cannot survive? They do not raise the wage, they give your job to foreigners...
