Australians rate Qantas worst airline

SYDNEY - Australians have rated their flag-carrier Qantas as the worst international airline in a survey conducted by a consumer watchdog.
Respondents to the survey repeatedly described Qantas staff as aloof and said the carrier's seating was cramped and uncomfortable
The survey of 4,000 people voted Singapore Airlines best while Emirates, Air New Zealand, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific all beat Qantas, the consumer magazine Choice said on Tuesday.
Choice asked subscribers to rate airlines they had used recently on value for money, booking processes, convenience, the check-in procedure, in-flight service, seat comfort, legroom and cleanliness.
Respondents to the survey repeatedly described Qantas staff as aloof and said the carrier's seating was cramped and uncomfortable.
Qantas told the magazine it was surprised by the result.
'In the past two years Qantas has been named one of the world's top airlines in the prestigious Skytrax World Airline Awards, the world's largest airline passenger survey, which in 2006 interviewed over 13.6 million travellers.
'Qantas achieved the ranking of number two in the world in 2005 and 2006,' a spokesperson said.
Choice speculated that the difference in results might be due to the Australian base of the survey and a tendency for people to to be particularly critical of their national airline. -- AFP -

why should I pay more for flights to the same destination, and suffer the ignominy of snobbish treatment at the hands of someone from my own country ? ....
the amenities that Singapore airlines offers can now be found on many other airlines too .... I'd rather fly cathay or thai airways ..... -

my parents flew air canada to come to see me last fall .... air canada is an airline operating in bankruptcy protection .... and has a terrible reputation among the Canadians .... but my parents were pleasantly surprised .... the ang moh air-stewardesses actually greeted them in (albeit heavily accented) mandarin ! ....
how's that for service ? .... on SQ you'll have to take the atittude from some snobbish ah lian talking down to you with some pseudo ang moh english accent ....

I never flew Singapore Airlines anywhere.
I'm happy with MAS, Royal Brunei, JAL etc..at least they serve better food and have more responsive cabin crew.
Northwest was the pits. Absolute pits in terms of service, food and even cabin air. -

People who gave SIA the thumbs up are the 1st class and business class passengers.
IÂ’ve only flew economy class. CAL has rude air stewardesses. SIA, Lufthansa and United Airlines so so only.
The good ones(economy class) that IÂ’ve experienced are Swiss Air, Qantas, Thai Airways. -
Hmmm I wrote Qantas off my list coz of the shocking service I experienced not to mention that they were bloody racist.
I like flying with SQ, MAS and Silkair. I've been in economy before and I didn't experience any bad service so far -

I have personally flown Lufthansa and found them to be fantastic: service and food-wise. Their policy of retaining older flight attendents as opposed to SIA's youth rotation policy is surely reaping dividends with their balanced experience.
JAL, ANA, Emirates, Cathay Pacific and Thai airways are also ranked highly in terms of quality of service.
Those that are of questionable standards include: United airways, delta airlines and of course KLM. -
And just to add, the chances of lost baggage when flying air france, is unusually high, especially if you make a transit stop at CDG.

I am not surprised at all! When you have substandard options, they will be alot of friction.

I flew before on SIA, MAS, Qantas, Cathy.... and a few more i can't remember. To be honest, All are the same to me. Since I can't afford to fly Business or 1st Class, their econ class is basicly all the same. All will give you that fake smile, the same airline food. As long as I get water when I want water, a pillow when I need one...... nothing to complaint about. You get what you paid for.

Singapore Airlines was voted top international airline while minnow Regional Express was the favoured domestic operator.
