Singapore backs nomination of Zoellick as next World Bank president
(Xinhua)
Singapore "strongly supports" the nomination of Robert Zoellick as the next president of the World Bank, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday night.
"Singapore is confident that Mr Zoellick's abilities and wealth of experience will put him in good stead to provide leadership to the World Bank to meet the challenges ahead," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It said that Zoellick, 53, is well-known to Singapore and other Asian countries, having worked closely with them in his former capacities as U.S. Trade Representative and Deputy Secretary of State.
It also lauded that Zoellick has been a tireless supporter of free trade and development, and had personally spearheaded the strategy to launch the World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha Development agenda.
"He also played a pivotal role in reviving the U.S.' economic engagement of Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia," the statement said.
It added that throughout his service in the U.S. government, Zoellick had also shown interest and paid attention to issues of the developing world.
Former World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz has announced his resignation after months of haggling over whether his decision to award a hefty payrise to a partner constituted an abuse of the bank's ethical rules.
