Malaysian airforce jet crashes
KUALA LUMPUR -- A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) fighter jet, involved in military exercises with four allied countries, crashed off the east coast on Wednesday after the pilot ejected safely, the official Bernama news agency reported.
The British-built Hawk Mk 200 jet was on a training mission during exercises by the Five Power Defence Arrangement (FPDA), which groups Malaysia with Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Britain.
The annual exercises run from Sept 2-14 and are based this year in Singapore, a defence official said.
The pilot, 31-year-old Captain Nadzeer Sallehuddin, was picked up by helicopter some 74 km south-east of Malaysia's Tioman island tourist resort and hospitalised with head and leg injuries, Bernama said.
An airforce spokesman, Major Roslan Salam, said a board of inquiry would investigate the cause of the crash.
He said in a statement: 'At the time of the incident, the aircraft was taking part in the Maritime Strike exercise with another Hawk jet.'
He added that the pilot encountered technical difficulties at an altitude of 152.4 m and decided to eject.
The RMAF is believed to have 18 Hawk Mk 200 jets and 10 Hawk Mk 100 jets, Bernama reported. -- AFP
