The gov is AFRAID that too many Singaporeans get influenced and start questioning them. There is NO violence involved in all those activities these people participated in.
If our government is truly righteous and has nothing to hide, have done NO wrongs, they shouldn't be AFRAID to let people express themselves. In the first place, if they have done no wrongs, there wouldn't be ANY such protests or Freedom March...

publicity stunts.. because that's what they are.. stunts..
instead of doing the right thing, getting some credibility, doing work for the people, working his way into a position where he can do something, he goes for cheap publicity stunts...
this demeans the rest of the opposition which works quietly and conscientiously to improve the lot of the people...
and worse, it tars the rest of the opposition as people look at this clown and think that the rest of the opposition is as pathetic and embarrassing as he is..
and worst of all, people think he's the leader of the opposition here!

It's really sad to see such things happening to Singaporeans who care so much about freedom of speech and human rights in our country.
While I am not shocked at this, I am surprised they are still using the same old tactics to scare Singaporeans to submission.
Which goes to show they never really opened up. Its all a bunch of lies!
Somehow things have not changed and nothing will - until we vote this iron fisted regime out of power.

I think you are rather too quick to judge him or you are misunderstanding the point of me starting this thread. Many may not agree with what happened between him and Chiam. But the point here, is not to garner support for the SDP per say, but to create awareness. Much like Ghandi and Mendela did. There are just laws and unjust laws, and the only way in singapore, to bring attention to unjust laws is to break them, non-violently. You see it as a publicity stunt, because in a way, it is a publicity stunt, designed to created awareness, both locally and internationally. This actually is not an uncommmon occurance in other developed countires.
He implied during his interview that he isn't really interested in winning elections, in other words, running for office is not one of his higher priorities, but rather, bring international pressure on the Singapore Government to reform and change, thru non-violent action.
Like Ghandi deliberately manufacturing salt at the coastline, when the British outlawed salt making by public. Maybe Chee really wants to be mytr, but then again it only possible if the PAP makes him one, or maybe they already have.... -
