08 June 2007---Citizenship not attractive enough?--http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/printfriendly/0,4139,132487,00.html
SINGAPORE saw more than 50,000 foreigners becoming permanent residents in 2005 and 2006. These figures were released by the Ministry of Home Affairs recently.
But over the last 10 years, an average of just 8,500 a year became citizens.
Is this an acceptable proportion?
The questop is pertinent because we are opening our doors wide to talent, in order to achieve a target of 6.5 million people working and living here.
With the low birthrate of some 25,000 babies a year,Singapore has to count on immigration to make up the numbers.
More foreigners are indeed answering the call.
The average number was 36,000 for the past decade, compared to the latest count of 50,000 over the last two years......
Mr Wong Kan Seng:--http://www.parliament.gov.sg/
Over the last 3 years, ie, from 2004 to 2006, an average of about 49,000 persons were granted permanent resident status in Singapore while an average of about 11,000 persons were granted Singapore Citizenship.
Yes, I hold similar views with you too.Originally posted by Zulkiflim:Salaam,
I think the number is astonishing but the more question need to be asked.
An example,if an indian national convert to a SG citizenship, while his american wife still remain a US citizen,at any time they can return to the US and the husband can get a green card or maybe citizenship.
Same for a China family,if the wife converts to citizenship while the husband remain a Chinese national, they still are able to return home and be China citizens.
there are many loopholes.
At the end of the day the quesiton is how many of the FT will stay long in the event of a crisis?
All this is just a blindsided drive to boost the population while not empowering the native citizens of SG.
I have read that our man power minister was porud that a Birtish billionaire converted to Sg citizenship.
But may i ask how many coutnries would not want a billionaire as a citizen?
The system here favors the RICH (local or foreign), and low tax have not been over years well equated to Quality Public Services - eg; standards of HealthCare...Originally posted by Poolman:That English Billionaires chose Singapore because of the personal income tax , low ma ..... they won't be tax so much in Singapore than in England , England tax is 44% u know ???
Heard these days, it's easier to get PR, my friend who's applying said, for a westerner, they can get it after staying for 1 week. Don't know how true is it, because I can't verify the information.Originally posted by ShutterBug:The system here favors the RICH (local or foreign), and low tax have not been over years well equated to Quality Public Services - eg; standards of HealthCare...
To the rich, they won't be bothered about Public Services, they go to private service providers... the locals who mid or low incomers will receive what the elites don't "consumer" - Left-overs...
I said it before; I would rather Higher Tax and better public services, than lower tax than other countries but receive paltry standards in Healthcare and other public services! As it stands now, healthcare costs have been steadily increased, while its standard/s are either stagnant or getting worse...!!
WTF man....!
I have this to say about our gov:Originally posted by maurizio13:Heard these days, it's easier to get PR, my friend who's applying said, for a westerner, they can get it after staying for 1 week. Don't know how true is it, because I can't verify the information.
My friend also told me, these days Singapore PR is no longer as valuable as before.
Think the government really desperate about the declining population that they will to take in anybody at such duration.
Can't blamed them...... too many S'porean just hate them no matter what. Might as well look for 'Love' else where..... even if it is short 'Love'.Originally posted by ShutterBug:I have this to say about our gov:

think gahmen not only desperate about the declining population but more so they worry about winning election. They must have feel good to have increasing number of people becoming PRs or citizens as they can count on them for voting.Originally posted by maurizio13:Heard these days, it's easier to get PR, my friend who's applying said, for a westerner, they can get it after staying for 1 week. They need to prove to immigrationOriginally posted by maurizio13:Heard these days, it's easier to get PR, my friend who's applying said, for a westerner, they can get it after staying for 1 week. I don't have $$$ and opportunity, if not I will migrate, too!!! Can't stand and agree with the way the country is run and the weather here is real bad, now has become worse/worst!!!Originally posted by will4:PR cannot vote but as for citizen, the govt is not happy many talented local leaving the country n the no is 150000. Channel U hosted by Belinda Lee on every Thursday in which she travelled to other countries in search of locals. There is this local couple who went to
Papuan New Guniea n they worked for many years. During the official interview, they told Belinda Lee PNG is better cause got more time for familiy compared to Spore. 8500 latest local compared to 50000 foreigner.
What about asking the immigration to publish the no of local migrating to other countties?Originally posted by rane:and the figure of the local talents working and migrating overseas will and is continuing to increase. What I meant is 8500 PR became citizen only despite having 50000 foreigners in Spore?Originally posted by qpicanto:watched that episode, surpise she did not asked him 'u got no IPPT/RT ya,?perhaps she does not want to alarm him.His co actually allowd him to take 2-3 yrs leave to Spore.
8500 Singaporeans in PNG?
Wonder is it a big headache Mindef to keep track of the paperworks requirement those who left or perhaps maybe got less paperork to do since they are gone for good?
Yes, good idea. ON TV, it was said that 8000 plus people give up their citizenship each year! Figures will continue to go up!!!Originally posted by will4:What about asking the immigration to publish the no of local migrating to other countties?![]()
Some foreigners actually said NS is a factor they did not want their children to be citizen. U know our NS forced local to go to SISPEC or OCS until they needOriginally posted by rane:Yes, good idea. i see. 8500 is the average figure for the past decade, that means certain year it has to be lower than 8500 unlike Sporeans who are leaving about 8,000 per year and it is a steady uptrend. Think once the exodus figure exceeds 8500 per year , they have to seriously think about dual citizenship. If not no of reservists will shrink steadily too since first generation PR has no NS liabilities.Originally posted by will4:What I meant is 8500 PR became citizen only despite having 50000 foreigners in Spore?
but PRs kids get their PR only when completed NS but for those who did sign up for NS what kind of status are they holding ?Originally posted by will4:Some foreigners actually said NS is a factor they did not want their children to be citizen. U know our NS forced local to go to SISPEC or OCS until they need
to keng their way off the course. Before that, the dunking incident involving
the Guards sergeant caused furore locally especially the method used is illegal.
Later on, they decided to reduce NS by half a year n reservist to 10 year obly.
It is announced before the General election period.
IIRC they can still remain as PRs after NS, with the option of taking up citizenship. However if they decline to serve they have to leave. At least that's what my ex-classmate, a Hongkonger, told me.Originally posted by qpicanto:but PRs kids get their PR only when completed NS but for those who did sign up for NS what kind of status are they holding ?
Yep, I want to know about that too.Originally posted by will4:What about asking the immigration to publish the no of local migrating to other countties?![]()
