hypothetically speakking, Sg really wouldn't have as much leverage in regional and international affairs if it was weak militarily. you'll be paying a lot more for water, we'll be unable to secure out coastlines and sealanes from pirates and other countries, the neighbours will bash us even harder every time they have problems and the US wouldn't have as much incentive to want to deal with us.

I am thinking in this world described by you which is only governed by power and arms, there would be no restraint in using WMD or biological agents and esp against such a small nation like Singapore, whereby a small portion is only needed to wipe out the entire country. in terms of hardware... though not as advance as americans... the make up for it with numbers.... in terms of assistance... its practically anything the viets requested and it will be provided. in terms of manpower... china sent 30,000 volunteers and the russians send thoudsands of advisors. not included are the large numbers of unseen hands working in millitary factory in china and russia to provide the viets weapons and ammo and the hands in the padi fields feeding the viets through the war....

Without a well funded and trained military, all our politics, stands, and assertions will be nothing but air. None of our words will carry any weight. Maintain a strong military force, YES, if not, we will definitely lose out when dealing with bilateral ties. Carry the biggest stick in the region.

it must be assumed that you are at least a decade ahead in technology in front of your competitors to ensure economic dominance in that particular field. by means of patents of the technology itself in question, as eventually other scientists would have come to the same discoveries. The question that comes to mind is what are Singapore's chances of becoming a leader? If taking in mind, your competitors are USA, Australia, Britain, China, then realistically the best one can hope for is second best, unless by some cosmic accident or fate, a potential Nobel prize winner is born in Singapore.
