Hey ppl...i am currently a student, but i will be going to NS soon
Pls tell me more about life in NS...the hardships, the possible events, and experiences....
what will i encounter?
I guess what i get from u ppl will be a more accurate account of life in NS.
STATS (just in case u ppl can estimate where i will go):
currently in one of the top5 JC....i guess A levels will be not bad
chinups 9 (for now, i guess might improve as i continue doing)
running 6 mins for 1.6k
eyesight 700 degrees (pls...i am not a nerd)....cannot be in airforce liao
really cannot stand mud and forests and wet environment hahaha
i think die liao

Today got army open house, mabbe you want to pop by and take a look. Should help you understand a bit. -
Just keep cool and go through, you might not like it but "BO PIAN", every male in Singapore has to go througn it. The worst part is not to go through it with a wrong attitude, then you confirm suffer inside...
As for the mud and forest, cannot siam lah...well...unless you PES E..... -

It's not that i am afraid of getting dirty, i don;t mind getting damn wet and cold....but it's just that i am borne with the detest for mud...dunno why
btw, heard from my friend that sometimes NS can be quite slack. How true is that? Cos i thought of doing a little studying in NS
...so that my U won;t suck too much

NS can be slack of you got a office job which has regular hours and allows you to go home after work. But there is no sure way of knowing what job you would have so get settled in your NS life first. Unless you get into OCS or something else which has long courses, you should be settled in about one year time. Then plan for some studying if your NS job allows you time for it.

How siong / slack your life in SAF, depends on your vocation and posting. No use planning or worrying too much now...just accept things as they come. Life in SAF nowdays is much much better compared to my days.
2.5 yrs is not that long.....don't think you are going in to suffer...if not, you will have a miserable time. Instead, think of it as a new learning experience...and learn to enjoy your life inside. It's all a frame of mind.

its a bit hard to study inside, unless, like they said, u get an office job or something like that...
but even there, life inside just sweeps u away and your best laid plans gets chucked aside... it takes a lot of discipline to keep to your plans.
and besides, unless u go out of your way to be lam-nua, its not likely that u will get too rusty... its all about exercising your brain, not necessarily doing homework. read a book in your free time, keep updated and talk to friends outside... that all contributes to enriching u and preparing u for life outside.
its actually good to take a break away from studying for awhile... it refreshes u and it makes u want to work harder after that cos of all the time u lost.
the army as a choice of career, is often overrated... they pay o.k, but its not for everybody... but NS as an experience, is often under-rated. u just have to take it the right way and try to get the most out of it.
and here's some tips for u:
nobody gets used to being dirty or life out in the field! but u learn to take care of yourself and make yourself comfortable so its not so bad...
a groundsheet over muddy ground is actually more comfortable to lie on than rocky ground. grass is the best, but there are usually insects. bring a trashbag. they're waterproof. your groundsheet is not.
mosquitoes are everywhere, but u learn how to avoid getting bitten (a little repellant over the ears so they don't buzz over them and a little on your face and neck... not too much on your forehead cos your sweat will wash them into your eyes and THAT HURTS. and finally, a layer all over your uniform: sleeves, collar, helmet and camo scarf.)
and last of all, have some self-respect... everybody gets tired, but try to control yourself... nobody appreciates having a bitching pussy in the section. u only end up pissing people off and STILL tired...
u'll bore yourself stupid if all u think about from day one is ORD... try doing what i do: wait for meal times
its more predictable (at least while in camp...) and u feel that time is passing... -

really....i am freaked out by gays ... but seriously... u have to keep an open mind about anything... nowadays, not all of them declare their orientations cos they know its hell outside once its put on record... very hard to get jobs, cannot get married, etc, etc... its quite sad for them.
so some of them really might end up in the same unit as u... as clerks, storemen or even riflemen... u never know... their manpower allocation procedure is the biggest mystery any NSmen has ever had the misfortune to encounter...
u wonder why this 1.58m small fry gets sent to engineers to build bridges (they still had it in my time... now its all buttons) or that super athlete gets posted to be a storeman it happens... abilities are always mismatched with appointments.
i've known men who should've been officers and officers who really ought to be shot! its ridiculous really...
moral of the story? deal with people based on how they work, not who they bugger in their free time. A fag who knows how to get things done is superior in my opinion, to a bloke who doesn't. so as long as they keep in professional (they usually do) and not hit on you, its really ok. the work comes first. -

E.g. If I mention some of the things the butt party do to pass time...you won't understand, without some lengthy explantion.
Basically everyone experiences is unique....cause different vocation, different unit...different pple...and also different times.
Signallers will complain abt the heavy sets they carry, cooks complain abt being tired, wake up super early....armor will complain abt cleaning their tanks.......artillery will complain abt cleaning their artillery barrel.
Those who went through in the 70s is different from the 80s...different from the 90s...and in this century.
Just go in with an open mind, and enjoy your time there. Trust me, some of your best friends in life will be made in SAF. The bond built will last a super long long time. =)
SAF is not a place for suffering only....there are fun times too...Dun worry so much lar! -

not really a very funny story lah...
basically, after passing out of BSLC (basic section leader course) at SISPEC, we were all really eager to get posted OUT! hated the goddamn place! SISPEC was still in pasir labar camp then and the 4 coys around the parade square was the absolute WORST place to be...
i was in sispec DELTA at that time and the OC was this SOF nut who was at least twice our age, but at least 3 times our level of fitness and easily 5 times our level of endurance...
so there we were, waiting for our next posting and praying like hell that we'ld get the hell out of here when i heard my name: cpl. tan, ASLC! F@#$%g S%&T...
the worst thing was, i posted just right across the parade square into BRAVO
whose OC was a certified sadist... 
out of the frying pan, into the fire...
moral of the story: NS is not like a box of chocolates... at least u're sure u get chocolates when u buy chocolates... in NS, u get anything from sweets to shits... its a bittersweet experience... -

Think of it this way.......what can't break you will only make you stronger! I used to have low self-confidence, low morale and all. This is to the point where i feel that i am inferior to others in terms of capabilities,achievements and looks!But after i entered the Army, I am whacked real hard and suffered. I have not bathe for days, doing CASEVAC,cuts from mimosa from leopard crawling,dig stupid drains on Sunday,kena typhoon in Taiwan......The list goes on.Think positive, this is a valuable life experience! Furthermore you are not the only one doing it,countless guys are going through the same if not more siong training.I have grown to be a man so can you.....

When you're halfway thru, you'll learn to bear with it.
When you're nearly done, you'll be impatient with it.
And when you're done, you'll have fond memories of it.
That should be an apt summary of ns life.
And for heaven's sake... You're given a chance to express your wish to go OCS in your SIT test. If you feel that you're up to it, then go for it
I made a really dumb mistake and said don't want OCS and Sispec, thinking can get easy job. Ended up as a recce trooper in BRC...

Thanks mate... Makes things a little more cheerful considering that you're in a little team twenty clicks in with scarcely enough ammo for a firefight... and that a helo to get you out costs more than the entire team put together!

i like scouts too... i get off days for every one i capture
not that i'm overly critical or anything, but they do make rather hilarious mistakes sometimes... walking on tracks for instance! a sure way to get caught, but... ho hum
