KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) -- The New Economic Policy (DEB) has succeeded in producing a big number of Malay professionals, many of whom have made a name for themselves in major cities in the world like London and Dubai, said Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin.
Zainuddin said that since the NEP was implemented, many Malays had become doctors, pilots and engineers who are not only serving the country but also making it big abroad.
"It is said that some of them earn as much as RM50,000 a month in big cities like London and this has made them decide not to return to Malaysia but to continue with their careers in those places because of the lucrative income," he said.
Recalling the early days of the NEP, Zainuddin said the western media objected to it when it was introduced by the late Tun Abdul Razak in 1971 and to this day it continued to get the same reaction from such media.
"If there was no NEP, we will still be talking about poverty distribution but today we are talking about unfair distribution of wealth," he said when launching the book "Dalam Ribuan Mimpi Gelisah" and its English version "The Long Nightmare" authored by a former detainee, Said Zahari, at the Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka (DBP) here today. Both versions are published by Utusan Publications & Distributors Sdn Bhd.
Zainuddin said there are people in the country who have forgotten that thousands of children of farmers and fishermen got to further their studies locally and abroad and became professionals, which changed the identity spectrum of the Malays, all made possible because of the NEP.
He also said that it gave added strength when a person could see things outside of the ideology he or she holds and be able to give views based on facts gathered from exposure, observation and experience.
On Said, who was once Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Melayu, Zainuddin said he was a true blue-blood of the newspaper.
"Said Zahari, in his book, recalls the strike he had led at Utusan Malaysia to champion press freedom, freedom of speech and democracy which culminated in him paying a heavy price for his action -- spending 17 years in detention, "said Zainuddin.
Said, who is now 79 years old, was under detention in Singapore for 17 years since 1963 under the Internal Security Act. He had once led the Partai Rakyat Singapura.
The book is a description of the struggle Said and his wife underwent during that period.
Said, who was present, said he wanted Malaysians, especially the younger generation, to read the book to get to know the many aspects of the nation's history which might not be available in other books.
"In my view of the history of political developments and the struggle for independence, there are moments in history that have gone unrecorded and untold," he said.

The Malaysian Government has used their ISA to detain Politicians from their Opposition Parties, who have stepped over their Malaysian OB markers on sensitive issues.
The difference between the Malaysian way from the Singapore way is that these Politicians - when released from detention - had their Political Rights restored. They will have their TOTAL Citizen Rights restored that allow them to freely participate in Politics without any incumberance from the ISD or the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Singapore Way is pathetic in using the Internal Security Act and the Internal Security Department as tools to keep the Ruling Party in perpetual power by nipping any potential political challengers to be incarcerated.
Recently, to keep their hand from being dirtied, they have resorted to incarcerating political challengers into the Mental Institution - claiming them to be mentally unbalance.
Incarceration in mental institution do not require any legislative reviews, and is dependent only on medical advice - which perhaps is the manner that LHL had in mind with his ''fix''.
This is a dangerous political development in Singapore, which is no different from the Stalinist State of old Communist Russia.
If Singapore is truly a modern state amongst others in the First World ?
The Politics conducted by the Ruling Party do not reflect this claim to an imagined reality.
Malaysia maybe a Third World country, its politics and politicians seems to have some ''First World'' human conscience towards their fellow citizens - even when their politics are tainted by the underlying political insecurity of the dominant race.
The presence of a Malaysian Minister at the book launch can be seen as communal support to a fellow Malay - even if Said Zahari is a Singaporean; and to show the difference in the political system of an open democratic Malaysian Political Ways, and the draconian paranoid ways of the seiged mentality preferred by the Singapore Ruling Politicians. -

Have you not heard the name Robert Ho, who was sent to the Singapore Mental Institute on at least three separate occassions ?
It was in 2001, his crime - posting supposedly inflamatory political articles using his real name.
Another person was sent to the Mental Institute simply for collecting a bad debt supposedly owed to him by none other than the previous Chief Justice Yong Pung How.
Mar 2005 :
Chief Justice Yong Pung How sued his former remisier, Mr Boon Suan Ban, for defamation because Mr Boon was apparently pestering the Chief Justice on an outstanding financial matter when Mr Yong was the chairman of a bank. The Attorney-General charged Mr Boon for criminal defamation. The financier was subsequently acquitted because he was of "unsound mind", but was ordered to be detained at the Institute of Mental Health where he now remains at the President's pleasure. In June, CJ Yong ordered all court files relating to the case sealed.
It becomes ominous that the Singapore Institute of Mental Health is used as a tool to deal with one's political opponents.
