Actually, more often than not, there is no point in arguing.Originally posted by Fingolfin_Noldor:You see, this is how this country works. People forget their parents were the ones who broke their backs working for this country, and that the old guard of PAP politicians did most of the work getting this country going. They had passion.
The current clump of two headed morons however, are riding on the hard work of the old people, and the pro-govt pee-brains have forgotten this. Govt propaganda has been sooo good in the portrayal of these retarded monkeys that you wonder whether these pro-govt morons have lost both wit and sense and their brains and sold them to the local karang guni man.
That I have to agree. But look at other countries that has been dominated by even more authoritarian govt, such as Germany, the ppl are still united despite that.Originally posted by soul_rage:The point I wish to make, is that USA and China have a nationalistic spirit, that I feel is generally lacking in the majority of our people. This nationalistic spirit is the one that can propel many to go back to their motherland to help it in times of crisis.
Why the lack of spirit? Coz Singapore is run too much like a corporation. It causes many people to become detached from the country. By removing Singaporeans' sense of belonging through the explicit limiting of their ability to vote in elections, and the lack of a genuine willingness to listen to the citizens, the PAP, in effect, is the one responsible for the current state of affairs today.
imagine you are an opposition member, who wants to mind other people's bizOriginally posted by morbid4ever:That I have to agree. But look at other countries that has been dominated by even more authoritarian govt, such as Germany, the ppl are still united despite that.
I have to agree that PAP to certain extent destroy nationalistic spirit. But I still think Sporean have to partly blame themselves too. I grew up in Spore and I know typical Sporean style is to "mind ur own business" Just my 2 cents
How abt ppl in living in an oppressive life under certain regimes and yet they fought for their future?Originally posted by soul_rage:imagine you are an opposition member, who wants to mind other people's biz
You enter politics, you get sued until you are even poorer than the beggar on the streets.
In the PAP, those who want to mind other people's biz (ie speak up for others, speak about the problems of the poor, etc), don't have much motivation to do so. Instead, minding one's own business (ie pay increase) is more beneficial and rewarding (back to motivational strategies)
With such examples, who wants to mind other people's biz?

Chinese citizens MIGRATE, but in their hearts, they have always that national spirit. All it takes is for China to have a crisis, and Chinese from all over the world will come back to help China.
If you are so narrow-minded in your thinking, let me relate you to history. When the Japanese attacked China, who helped China? Not the non-Chinese foreigners, but largely Chinese from all over the world. (Chinese who aren't PRCs included, inclusive of Singapore Chinese, American Chinese, etc).
Pls stop making us laugh with your severe lack of knowledge and stupidity. I sincerely implore you to stop pretending to be a patriot and insult all true patriots here.

ask the Chinese in Singapore, especially those posting in this forum, if America attacks PRC, how many will go and help??
During WW2, the Chinese moved to SEA looking for a better living, they wasn't thinking of migrating to become Singaporean, or Malaysian, because these places were not existing as countries and there were no change of nationality. I am not sure about the Chinese in Thailand and the Philippines who appeared to assimilate very quickly. the Chinese in Malaya, Singapore, Indonesia remain Chinese, as a race, with their loyalty to Tangshan. They retained their chinese culture, built chinese schools, even the university, known as Nanyang University. They stayed together as Chinese under different clans or associations as such the Hokkian Association, they supported China as their own country. Even during the early days of Singapore, many chinese educated singaporeans were thought to be communists, loyal to the communists in China, never read singapore history?
chinese nationalism arised only these recent years together with the rise of PRC, as the economic powerhouse. You with chinese nationalism? or Singaporeanism? who are the true patriots here? those who are migrating, but with hearts in Singapore? don't make me laugh.![]()
This is a very fair post. Salute.Originally posted by morbid4ever:How abt ppl in living in an oppressive life under certain regimes and yet they fought for their future?
That is how French revolution started i suppose.
Yes, PAP is trying their very best to tone down the opposition, but if our society are willing to fight for their rights just like the French, I believed it can be done.
Our society spirit and nationalism is not very strong partly because we do not have a strong culture that we share instinctively.
U cannot, in fairness, say it is ALL the govt fault.
Hence, for ppl who really went against the authorities for righteous sake, I really salute them. They deserve my utmost respect.
I must admit I am a coward, I care nothing so long Life is still good.
Nationalism is something that require time, hopefully in near future, S porean have to courage to defy authorities if the latter tries to oppress us.
The selfless courage is very much needed in Spore.
I shall cut off the "Idiot" label since I believe you make more sense than Gazelle, though I tend to disagree with your standOriginally posted by sgdiehard:![]()

Singapore is my homeland and would forever be my home. However PAP has reduced it to nothing more than a sweatshop. Introducing more and more policies that urges Singaporeans to do something for themselves, enforcing the fact the Singapore is not a "welfare state" while taking more and more from the people.Originally posted by soul_rage:Either way, all I am nitpicking against you, is that your statement implies 100% of Singaporeans who emigrated are ungrateful people. Your statement CANNOT stand, so I have to disagree against it.
You also implied that 100% of Singaporeans who stay are patriotic. Again, I disagree.

What the PAP is doing now sickens me. Please give me back my homeland PAP. Please let Singaporeans know the true meaning of "a sense of belonging". Please show us that the government really cares instead of being the blood sucking vampire that it is now.
We are Singaporeans, not PAPeans. Whatever we discuss here should be for the good of the nation, not the good of a single Party. Parties can disband for all I care, but the Nation's people must stick together when the time comes. That will mark the true worth of the Nation's identity... the Nation's pride.
You said it all!!! As it is now, I don’t see unity among the people of Singapore. Many times, when others or I voice our concerns about how the country is run by the present ruling party, people are just so fearful that they stop us from talking about it. The only thing they say is mind your own business. For eg, my cousin who is also not happy with the way of the ruling party, stopped me from talking by saying “nothing wrong, they are doing very well . . .. . .” this is so hypocritical.Originally posted by bigmouthjoe:Singapore is my homeland and would forever be my home.
