Why the lack of spirit? Coz Singapore is run too much like a corporation. It causes many people to become detached from the country. You enter politics, you get sued until you are even poorer than the beggar on the streets.
In the PAP, those who want to mind other people's biz (ie speak up for others, speak about the problems of the poor, etc), don't have much motivation to do so. Instead, minding one's own business (ie pay increase) is more beneficial and rewarding (back to motivational strategies)
With such examples, who wants to mind other people's biz? -

Yes, PAP is trying their very best to tone down the opposition, but if our society are willing to fight for their rights just like the French, I believed it can be done.
Our society spirit and nationalism is not very strong partly because we do not have a strong culture that we share instinctively.
U cannot, in fairness, say it is ALL the govt fault.
Hence, for ppl who really went against the authorities for righteous sake, I really salute them. They deserve my utmost respect.
I must admit I am a coward, I care nothing so long Life is still good.
Nationalism is something that require time, hopefully in near future, S porean have to courage to defy authorities if the latter tries to oppress us.

I am not sure about the Chinese in Thailand and the Philippines who appeared to assimilate very quickly. the Chinese in Malaya, Singapore, Indonesia remain Chinese, as a race, with their loyalty to Tangshan. They retained their chinese culture, built chinese schools, even the university, known as Nanyang University. They stayed together as Chinese under different clans or associations as such the Hokkian Association, they supported China as their own country. Even during the early days of Singapore, many chinese educated singaporeans were thought to be communists, loyal to the communists in China, never read singapore history?

Yes, we do not have a strong culture. Our ethnic culture, espcially Chinese, disappear with our western education; with the rise of PRC, we confuse our own chinese ethnic identity with PRC nationality; our Singaporean culture need a long time more to form in a multi racial society . we are bombarded with materialism and consumerism, nationalism hardly can raise its head, again, confusion between a Singaporean identity and a PAP supporter retard the progress of singapore nationalism. All these talk about migrating does not help in building up singapore nationalism.
The govt is largely to be blamed, not many people have the gut to admit like you do. Its indeed true that people who are in other countries have their loyalty to China in the past. Even now, I believe that there are people like that.

Many times, when others or I voice our concerns about how the country is run by the present ruling party, people are just so fearful that they stop us from talking about it. The only thing they say is mind your own business. If the mindset of the people doesnÂ’t change, I am afraid there is nothing we can do to be united as one. People of Singapore though are full of grievances about the ruling party, majority of them are too timid, fearful, or too self centred to want to be united. Sad!!
