Prosperity does not equate to good quality of life.Originally posted by wisefool83:I would like to bring towards your attention an interesting report done by the Legatum Institute for Global Development. http://www.prosperity.org/downloads/2007LegatumProsperityIndex.pdf
According to the report, Singapore rank number 12 in terms of prosperity, and also number 1 in Asia. Besides the usual outstanding economic performance, there's another interesting point which I've noticed in the report.
If you would look at page 6 of the report, Singapore scores a 9 at political and civil liberties, which is high lighted in green which "indicates exceptionally strong score". Yup, you read right, Singapore scored exceptionally strong at political and civil liberties, which places us ahead of South Korea and on par with Greece. Sure the majority of the European countries scored better than us on this, but hey, an A is an A. And in fact, I'm a bit loss of words as to what to comment.
Sg should score 0 for political and civil liberties as well as freedom of choice! Sometimes one shouldn't trust such ranking completely.Originally posted by wisefool83:I would like to bring towards your attention an interesting report done by the Legatum Institute for Global Development. http://www.prosperity.org/downloads/2007LegatumProsperityIndex.pdf

Prosperity does not equate to good quality of life.
The government sucks our money excessively, how would it not be prosperous.
If I become PM, I will increase the prices of HDB, increase utilities charges, increase GST to 15%, increase CPF withdrawal age to 70. You will be amazed at the performance of my government's reserves.
Via good governance = -1
Via better education = -1
Think your results substantiate the fact that governance in Singapore is crap. The top 11 countries all have governance scores of 13-17, while Singapore has minus 1.
The results for Life Satisfaction seems interesting.
We are rank 24th for Life Satisfaction, Indonesia is ranked 29th.
Via equality of opportunity = 0
Via time for leisure = -13
Via community life = -9
Via stable marriages = -2
No opportunity, no leisure, no life, no marriage.
Hehehe
Are you supporting the opposition or the ruling party? Don't understand why you provide evidence to substantiate that we have an underperforming government.
This is the don't know how many million times I read this kind of taunting language liao (I'm not saying they are all from you, just commenting on this particular type of post language). You all really think it's useful? Think it's rather childish and unconstructive.Originally posted by maurizio13:

You already mentioned in your first post about civil liberties. I am not a parrot like most of the PAP supporters here, who spew whatever they hear or read from the media without using their head. I am the countervailing balance to your so called objective comments.Originally posted by wisefool83:According to the report, Singapore rank number 12 in terms of prosperity, and also number 1 in Asia. Get real!!! Singapore strong in civil liberties???
Hence my emphasis! If you really want to be partisan, then you can say that I'm on your side with regards to this statement dude. (Although from my point of view, I'm merely bringing an interesting fact "There are some dudes[very well-read and learned dudes, I believe] in this planet at this moment who actually judged that Singapore scores exceptionally high on political and civil liberty!"
Common civil liberties include freedom of association, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech, and additionally, to due process, to a fair trial, to bear arms, and to privacy.
So how many of the above criteria do you think Singapore satisfy?
Objectively???Hmm..... and why would that statement not be objective? Most reports that I've come across does mention that Singapore is doing well economically. "Objectively", to my understanding, is simply to state what it is and most such comparison reports do not dispute Singapore's economical achievements.
Not to emphasize that Singapore is good???
You said "besides the usual outstanding economic performance", is that objective?
