Unfortunately, Malaysia is NOT a secular state, nor does it make any attempt in having a secular image.
In the Constitution, it has declared Islam as the Official State Religion.
The sadest irony of Malaysian politics is the skewed minds of the mercurial Malays in demanding Equal Rights for their community similar to that given to the other ethnic groups in Malaysia; but they will prevent themselves - the Malay supreme dominant race - from enjoying the Constitutional Guarantee in the FREEDOM of Religion accorded to ALL Malaysians.
Article 3.1 indeed states Islam as the religion of the federation, but also indicates
"but other religions may be practised in peace and
harmony in any part of the Federation."Article 5 also states:
"(5) This Article does not invalidate or prohibit -(a) any provision regulating personal law; (b) any provision or practice restricting office or employment connected with the affairs of any religion, or of an institution managed by a group professing any religion, to persons professing that religion"Literally taken, the constitution provides freedom for its people to choose which religion to worship, despite islam being the 'official' religion, which in turn projects a 'secular image', not a blanket islamic culture.
A pity the inner workings do not coincide.
