greetings to all,i'm currently a poly student and have actually tot of signing up army as a career when i am doin my NS as i haf this keen interest bout the life in green..noe its kinda stupid but i wana get into the commandos...and den be an officer...cdo officer?sounds exciting to be my aim..how exactly will my route of advancement be like to hit my aim?Considering myself to be seriously garang....i dun haf anione to ask....hope to haf some feedback..

Sounds like me. hehehe... Anyways, my plan is to finish BMT and see how i like unit/NS life before I sign anything. Think thrice, you are signing on for life. If you are fit enough, then all I can say is "Why not?". Make you are damn fit....can get at least IPPT gold standard, your background is clean... including your family etc....eyesight not more than 100 degrees.. Let's just say the life in green is not as glamourous as it looks on TV or cinema....the hardship behind it...nobody knows. I strongly recommend you decide after you finish your BMT. You should have a more better idea of SAF then. Life in green is not suitable for everybody.
But a word of advice, with a poly cert, you wun advance far in your rank...you need more "paper". Do think abt that. -
Garang is a plus point but it will not guarantee that u will bcome officer. It will make thing things worse in u are on the wrong ball. To be a commando officer would require u to excel not only in BMT, but also in commando section leader course. Only then will u be selected for OCS. -
i frankly think u're nuts...
firstly, mindef is in "paper" mode these days... no paper qualifications, be prepared henta kaki...
secondly, mindef is especially in scholar mode these days... they take care of the careers of their scholars (and why shouldn't they? they've spent a fortune educating them!) if u're not one of them, be prepared for many frustrating moments when u think that u're just as good as them, but your chance is lost cos u're not one of them. it may or may not be true but it will eat u inside out and piss u off plenty if it ever happens...
thirdly, unless u're thinking of doing it for the long haul... i.e. straight in from NS, first contract, second contract and work all your life, then retire with a fat bonus, don't do it. u stay in for one contract, u feel tempted to stay on forever... at 30, u really don't wanna risk too much by starting all over, esp if u've got family...
fourth, u only aim to be an officer. its the only route that pays properly. but because u've only got a diploma, be prepared to henta kaki even if u get there... u may not even get captain. rarely they do, but u never, ever get major.
fifth, keep your options open... many other places other than commandos can prove just as rewarding in many ways. unless u like pain in massive doses, i seriously don't think its a good idea to go in and end up hating it... the regulars in there are really extreme
they usually screw their limbs before they're 30... kneecaps, elbows, back, u name it, they've cracked it... its physically very intense but these people have proven that its "mind over matter"... and they'll keep going if they can because their career depends on it and they really like doing it... its beyond my comprehension ...

with a dip, as a WOSE, u can get quite high... but even as a Senior warrant officer drawing a rather nice pay, u still gotta salute a 2LT... no pride lah...
with a dip, as a commissioned officer, u'll be lucky to break Cpt... very hard to get any higher without a degree as an officer... the career plan is really attractive too.. its called SAVER... that one really PAYS man =P but u gotta be a grad to move up...
but what the hell... the pay's always better outside... army is not exactly iron rice bowl anymore, but its definitely harder than real-world porcelain... so unless u were looking for stability or u LOVE the uniformed services, forget it... u'll rot inside. it gets pretty stagnant after awhile... -

aLL interesting...aniwae regarding the part which comments on "not like in the movie"...weLL...i wasn't motivated by watching shows watching heros....i do agree they are shiok...but man,i tot my life was to fight...i am now attached and serving in some kids organisation and somehow got my way to it.I think i really like to put knowledge into application and somehow got myself fighting fit to go into a defending war....mayb i siao lah...but well,to think of it...thou i've not been to NS...i really can't wait to get the shit in it...mayb i'm juz being curious how shit up it can be...but somehow i think i juz wana take shits...wtf?i dun understand myself exactly...but since young i alwaz cap[tured this image of myself in some stuck up old camo Uniform and holding a bloody long rifle running alone...and my last scene was blur and unclear i recall bombarding my head against sumting...it alwaz hit my mind....mayb that was my past!!!??? duno leh...siao eh...aniwae...tink its kind of waste in life if u can't reach the pinnacle of ur doings...mayb turn myself into a trooper in the SOF....haha...some dreams....aniwae,thankz fer reading and replying ppl...its cool to get replies... -
once u get in there, this is the procedure:
BMT - 3 months promote to PTE
BCT basic commando training - 3 months then promote to CPL
Airborne Course - earn ur wings after 5 jumps. 2 CF(clean fatigue), 2 CE(combat equipment), 1 NCE (night combat equipment).
VT vocational training: you have to go for "leader course" to be a 3SG b4 u can be selected to go for OCS.
for officers, they will leave after these nine months and go to OCS without the triservice term. so i guess that leaves 6 more months b4 they become a cdo 2LT. somewhere in between i think u will have to do the 72 click route march like the rest of them. can't remember if our officer cadets joined us.
after that i think it's much the same as any other place. come back with a chocolate bar, do your PC tour, then the rest is see how..
this is quite old information tho... things might have changed by now, and i dun even remember a few things.. so this might not be the most accurate info. -
basically the life of a cdo is combat all the way. mission after mission after mission. jump after jump after jump. not to mention 5 or 10 click SOCs and yearly 5km vest and slack runs, and of course IPPT which is the least of our problems. if not then it's parade. if get BCU then have to march in NPD... usually they get the BCU. and marching in NDP is cool, it's the bloody rehearsals that drive us nuts. on SUNDAYS.
most regular CDOs have no life. they are really that passionate and those with the passion and they ability go on to be rangers or even SOF. some even come back from overseas with a yellow ranger tag on the right sleeve (US trained)
i never did understand their passion but i do respect them for it. -
