I kind of assumed that anybody who tries to 'tell her off', or 'put her in place' or educate her on her misinformed notions about chinese, would do so without being rude or being counter-racist so to speak. Or at least, that would be how I try to handle it. Anything else would just be plain shouting. It's like in sgforums, you don't necessarily have to reply people with flames, insults and other types of name-calling.Originally posted by ShrodingersCat:aside from the good 'feeling' that you have 'put someone in her place'
being rude in a situation like this
does nothing to educate the person, change his/her mind about racism
it merely adds fuel to the racism and gives more fodder for him/her to talk about
if you can solve this problem without being rude, its great
but let's not become victims of 'reverse racism' where u become racist to someone else's race simply because one of them was racist towards you.
I think if you observe most of the posts - most of those who are very pro speaking up are also reacting in an angry and indignant manner. Their anger is valid but the reality is can we respond in a calm and reasonable way when we are overcome by our emotions? It is commendable though if you are able to handle such an issue calmly, politely and not fall into the trap set by someone who is picking for a fight.Originally posted by SumOne:I kind of assumed that anybody who tries to 'tell her off', or 'put her in place' or educate her on her misinformed notions about chinese, would do so without being rude or being counter-racist so to speak. I guess it matters how and what exactly is said in response to that person.
Still, that other thing you said is quite valid, don't label all just because of the shortcomings of one. There are what we call black sheep afterall.
I guess like as you mention, it's how you do it, how you put your point across without having to degrade yourself like the other unreasonable party.Originally posted by ShrodingersCat:I think if you observe most of the posts - most of those who are very pro speaking up are also reacting in an angry and indignant manner. Also, we have come across people who are very bigoted in their way of thinking in sgforums too. Regardless of the number of calm, sensible, reasonable posts by other forumers, those who are bigoted would not change their minds easily.
Those who carry things to the extreme, who would post things calculated to evoke an angry response would be called a troll. And we all know - not to feed the troll.
In real life, its the same. Standing up for the underdog is a good thing. It is definitely better than apathy. However, If all you can do is to stand up on the spot, fume in anger afterwards, than call the government to reconsider having strangers on our shores - then I think we would all have fallen into the trap of reverse racism.
We can't look at this isolated incident and just think about Singapore. It isn't simply about whether the average Singapore 'stand up' for this behaviour or not. But to realise It's really the same thing that's causing terrorism and fear all over the world. Tolerance, understanding and education - do we choose to be a player in these fields - or fear, xenophobia and discrimination?
She should, but comment already said out, cannot take back in. Since she already helped, cannot take back. This woman insulting a country and a race....... has really bad impressions of Singapore and also Chinese...Originally posted by ghimpheng:she should just offer the help while keep her comments to herself
or if she dun wish to help also can
better than she help and insult until like that
but she did say "sorry" didnt she. maybe she is in a hurry.Originally posted by simnatic:well, many singaporeans are of that sort. will not even stand up for themselves. a few months ago i observed a similar incident but that time Singaporeans stood up.
It happened at a taxi stand in the city area. There was this Malay-chinese couple who had queued up at a stand for quite a long time, when it was their turn, an Ang Moh woman cut the queue and took their taxi. The malay lady did not let the cab go. She banged on the window and the ang moh opened it. Then she said sorry, and told the driver to move on. The malay lady then banged on the driver's window and asked something like,"Are you going to let this woman go? She thinks she's superior to us or something?"
Well, the taxi driver stood up for the Singaporean side and the woman was asked to leave. Heck, the ang moh woman was too embarassed to even join the queue and went somewhere else.
this one is not delibrately, but for the one about the caucasian woman PURPOSELY scolding singaporeans and insulting chinese, that is too far.Originally posted by crazy monkey:but she did say "sorry" didnt she. maybe she is in a hurry.
No, put it on youtube to make her as famous as the HK Bus Uncle.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:I will just record everything down and send it to the police station.

such person who just wants to make a fuss on the bus, trying to get other's attention and also trying to insult us, as singaporeans and also chinese, should actually be reported to the police. it is an offence, right?Originally posted by LazerLordz:The lady should be ejected off the bus. I would close one eye if a couple of ah bengs were to give her a solid push out of the bus.Originally posted by BusSpeeder:such person who just wants to make a fuss on the bus, trying to get other's attention and also trying to insult us, as singaporeans and also chinese, should actually be reported to the police. it is an offence, right?

Nah, the thing is she insulted Singaporean, and of course we find that unacceptable since we are Singaporean. If the PRCs are insulted, then they should defend themselves.Originally posted by spinsugar:How I wish I'd been there. I would've just told her she's on the wrong bus, the bus to Changi Airport is Bus no xx.
One thing I'd like to comment on is the irony of how some forumers here find it unacceptable when this Caucasian insults all Chinese. But when PRCs are generalised and insulted on a racist note, the same forumers join in. I'm befuddled, because end of the day, we are all Chinese, no matter which country or city we're from. Hmm....
In my opinion, my grouse with PRCs isn't racial based, but stems more from their crude characteristics and unsavoury traits...Originally posted by spinsugar:How I wish I'd been there. I would've just told her she's on the wrong bus, the bus to Changi Airport is Bus no xx.

People are not moulded by government, but by their parents, their upbringing. There is no difference between Caucasians, Chinese, Indians, Malays,....only the good the bad and the ugly.Originally posted by ShutterBug:As for this matter of a raving mad Caucasian, I hope there will be more of such incidences... because ultimately it reflects on the way people were moulded by the government, and the government's open policy to foreigners influx....
