Are we peasants?

(So sorry if this has been repeated, but many of the issues coming up again is only highlighting this argument - Are we really peasant minded?)
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew once told Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping that the ethnic Chinese in Singapore were descendants of illiterate coolies and farmers from southern Fujian.
This had made them less able than the people of Hong Kong or Taiwan, whose ancestors were mainly businessman or technocrats.
Singaporeans could function well only as a group, not as individuals, Li told a Chinese newspaper. They would never be non-conformist or stand out above the crowd.
“If you ask me, other than Lee Kuan Yew, his son Hsien Loong, politicians aside, I can only think of a cute girl, (pop star) Stephanie Sun, there aren’t many other outstanding people. The impression that I get (of normal Singaporeans) is stupid”.
SingaporeÂ’s system, Li said, stemmed from the ancient Chinese political philosophy of legalism, which emphasised on the rule of law.
“Singaporeans do not break rules, but they also do not stand out,” he said in Mandarin.
He said Lee Kuan Yew had wanted to build a British-style democracy but because the people were not up to scratch, they only knew how to toe the line.
I feel quite sad that ppl think we're considered to be from an inferior lineage of peasants. Do you think we are? Most of the issues coming out abt Singaporeans being easily manipulated by the PAP (GST rise, bus hike, cab hike, propaganda, political censorship etc) somehow really shows our inherent underling nature.... -

Hardly surprising, given that he believed in eugenics. Don't forget that we have Malays, Indians and Eurasians among our people, or that we had people like Lee Kong Chian, Hoo Ah Kay and Tan Tock Seng, just to name a few. Anyway, who's the Li person mentioned?

For all his rhetorics espousing the virtues of eugenics and other fair-weather policies, he has neither got the guts to openly declare himself a tyrant (in this respect, even the PRC has more integrity for they don't claim to be running a democracy ), nor achieve anything close to matching what the greatest tyrants on the planet have achieved. Hitler's economic achievements prior to the outbreak of WWII would make this regime look an abject failure...
So how seriously would you take the comments from an inferior breed extolling the drawbacks of other allegedly inferior people?

If Mr li is smart, Suzhou project wouldn't be a failure and make singapore lose face. If his ancestors are so great, then he wouldn't betray singapore during wwII by helping the japanese. And don't forget, he earned singapore's independence not for the people, for his family alone to gain $$$ and power. We people only can follow rules and be puppets to the government.

Isn't it contradictory what he's said?
If we are not the type to stand out from the crowd, why are there so much control over public speaking, freedom of speech, and gathering in public places?
If he labels us as Feeble Minds and lame characters, he should take away all these "security defences", walls, and moats since we are like sheeps...no??
If Singaporeans are the docile law abiding types, why the need for so much PARANOIC CONTROL???

Because it seems that all those here are always questioning the Govt.... The Govt could make themselves believe that all those below them are peasants, and you could lay down and help them..... or believe you are better and THINK for yourself. Remember that REALITY is what we make of it.....
And can you quit stuffing your bloody head in the ground? How about explaining to me why we have a rubber stamp parliament? The fact that a rubber stamp parliament exists is an example of why the GOvt thinks us peasants. Why? It doesn't trust us "peasants" to exercise our right as citizens to vote for the "right people". GCK himself said that if not for the GRC system, certain MPs wouldn't have gotten elected.
And one more thing, since when did your opinion ever counted for anything in this country? -

If you are voting with only your rice bowl occupying your thoughts, does that make you a peasant? Understandable mindset for a developing country, but for a government that claims to be first world, shouldn't the people be thinking citizens with 1st world mentalities?
If we are a first world nation, should the prevailing standard of living be on par with other 1st world nations if not better? -
I believe this is the kind of mindset instilled into us by the government. We do not have, and are not allowed to have voice for this and that. The only thing we can only try to ensure ourselves is of course, our ricebowls.
