Tree's end is near
It cost the Land Transport Authority (LTA) $200,000 to save this 80-year-old tree in the middle of Braddell Road from being felled two years ago, but the authorities have decided it has to be chopped down after all.
In spite of the road markings and signs put up to warn motorists about the speed limit and the tree, there have been "near accident" situations observed and reported by motorists, said the LTA and National Parks Board in a joint statement yesterday.
To prevent potential accidents, the tree will be removed, beginning this Sunday. — Lin Yanqin

Angsana the most lifespan of 90 years. Further the safety concerns to road user during stormy weather is quite apparent isnt it? 42 year of road management in Singapore by LTA can tell u it is not safe.
Is LTA bizarre decision, a politically correct decision, fearing it might offend the NP Board which once had a ex-PM sitting in it ?
come on S$200,000-00 may be small compared to its revenues it rake in via coe, parf, erp, diesel tax it is not a small sum afterall.
believe Singaporeans would appreciate the use of tax payer money wisely. -
stupid lah can plant 1000 trees elsewhere with that kind of money.

I think the initial idea of preserving the tree might be of certain heritage value. Perhape the spending of $200,000 can be uiltised to erect a barrier or other safety measure such as a chevron line to warn motorists of the preservation site.
The initial cost had been sunked in but perhape we should examine how much cost can still be saved despite the foul up in the first.

I support LTA's earlier decision to save the 80 year old tree. I disagree with their current decision to cut it down.
Trees can live for hunderds of years, not 90 years.
We may plant a 1,000 trees elsewhere but we won't live long enough to see any of them grow to the size and magnificence of our tree in question.
You can make the road safer without cutting down the tree. By building a road divider all along the road leading to the tree, impatient drivers have no excuse but to keep a distance long before they reach the tree. -

In any other privatised firm, a $200k 'waste' would mean someone's head being chopped off and twice that value of profit margin to recoup the ridiculous loss.
How many more of these unplanned wastages is being proliferated in our govt and govt-linked offices? -
