my situation is that they wasted 1hr 10mins of my time waiting for them for stuff to be done.Originally posted by ^tamago^:they dun work for one hour u will die is it?
the actual muslim `service' is on the friday itself. the imam in all the masjids across singapore will deliver the khutbah or sermon. the sermons are basically weekly reminders, sometimes admonitions, sometimes advice regarding muslims living in non-muslims environtment and sometimes general current affair issues are brought up, recently the organ donation issue.Originally posted by Icemoon:Actually when is the main Muslim "service"? It cannot be on friday noon 'cos the time is too short for any interaction!
Shouldn't the more important prayer be on thursday evening? That is when Muslims welcome the "sabbath".
Islam got concept of "cell group" or not? Or at least a community where you belong, where the members encourage one another in the faith and study the Qu'ran together.
Your head. Don't try to spread misconception.Originally posted by OneDoubleManTayar:muslims do not welcome the `sabbath' on thursday night. i noticed the word sabbath here is used for the meaning `rest' , but that's not what it means. sabbath is a jewish word meaning seven or the seventh day whereas in arabic the seventh day is called yaumul sab'ah. sabbath in jewish, sab'ah in arabic.

Shabbat is primarily a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. The word "Shabbat" comes from the root Shin-Beit-Tav, meaning to cease, to end, or to rest.
my head? no need to go that far. u have given me information contrary to what i wrote. i looked it up, u're right and i'm wrong. not wanting to spread misconceptions here.Originally posted by Icemoon:Your head. Don't try to spread misconception.
I'm more acquainted with Judaism than the average person. In Hebrew, the word does mean 'rest'.
So friday (evening thursday to evening friday) has no special significance?Originally posted by OneDoubleManTayar:what i tried to put across was, friday is not a `rest day' or sabbath as u would put it, for the muslims. we we're told, in the quran, that when the prayer call is made on friday, we should stop our bussiness dealings, and go to the masajid for our prayers. and after that we can continue with our worldy affairs.
Sigh, its already a generally accepted practice. Even in secondary schools, muslim boys are allowed to go for prayers and then come to school at about 1:30 or 2pm or around that time.(Whether they abuse it or not is not our problem)Originally posted by leo-kun:my situation is that they wasted 1hr 10mins of my time waiting for them for stuff to be done.
aiya .. pple also anyhow park due to non-religious reasons. As long as there is a big event and not enough parking space, people will anyhow park.Originally posted by hisoka:whatever but i feel they should probably take care of the problem of illegal parking or obstruction due to prayers(whatever religion)
basic courtesy and laws.

Right. The only difference between friday and other days is the obligatory friday prayers. Calling it a muslim sabbath isnt really an accurate explanation since it is not a rest day but good enough for a quick understanding.Originally posted by Icemoon:So friday (evening thursday to evening friday) has no special significance?
I did not mean that friday is a rest day or sabbath. Notice I was careful to put them in quotes. Since it is more or less sabbath for the Jews and Christians, I presume a similar idea exists in Islam.
*Coughs*
After all .. Islam copied and reinvented the Judeo-Christian faith.
But how come the prayer must be in the mosque?Originally posted by Gauze:Right. The only difference between friday and other days is the obligatory friday prayers. Calling it a muslim sabbath isnt really an accurate explanation since it is not a rest day but good enough for a quick understanding.
