well, i kinda agree that these china-rians are from hell! rmbr not long ago there was this china company that produces fake eggs and another that did fake baby milk powder? and there was this company that fried instant noodles out of diesel oil...and don't forget the most recent one; bun fillings made out of cardboard! guess what? they are all from CHINA!

Anyway about immigration....
I think there is no choice, because of the condition facing Singapore.
Either let in immigration......or shrink....and face big problems in the process.
Right now there are already problems in this shrinking process....and immigration is to stem the process.
Problems such as higher and higher retirement age. Why? Because not enough younger population to support the older people.
So....this is the real cold hard truth.....Singapore is faced with a problem.....people are marrying late, having fewer babies, everybody has to work including wives, and retirement age is pushed up....and etc.
If internally cannot resolve the situation, has to resort to external help, which is, immigration.
Other countries.....some are also in similar position.....
New Zealand is having immigration as well. New Zealand is even worse because the people flock out, to Australia and elsewhere. So they have to open immigration even more. Some people in New Zealand dont like the immigrants who are many Asians, and voice out nationalistic backlash, like what is happening somewhat in Singapore. But in Singapore the immigrants are from China and India, same with existing population.
My view is.......give another 10 years......and the population here in Singapore will be used to it, and accept this situation.
This is just initial shock and adjustment.....
Other small countries also have alot of foreigners.....UAE/ Dubai has more foreigners than citizens....
I think Singapore may follow similar path....
And the people will get used to it.....

Some Chinese Singaporeans....having discomfort with Mainland Chinese....and to a certain extent, Indian Singaporeans having discomfort with Mainland Indians.....
Pls....we have to realize something....we have exactly the same ethnicity....same roots....they are from our Old Countries....actually they are our family.
Difference is mainly socio-economic or lifestlye.
Everytime I read about this sort of.....Mainland Chinese bashing....I have an uneasy feeling......the feeling like, a rich man is looking down on a poor man who is his brother, that sort of feeling u know.....
A family member go out to outside world....become rich.....then disowned his poor family back home at his old village or old country....
I have this sort of feeling, and it seem wrong.....
I know....this is only natural.....just human instinct....When East Germany reunited with West Germany, also alot of West Germans felt uncomfortable with Easterners, and they looked down on them. Because mostly they are poorer. Although they have same language, same ethnicity. In fact divided only for 1, or 2 generations.
Singapore......I think abit longer than 1 or 2 generations....maybe 3, 4, or 5 generations.......
But still abit tragic.....
Although it is natural to have impressions on people, whether they are richer or poorer, at least we should try to control some emotions.....

me travel to china for business trip reg. hence i must say some of the comment here are not quite true. i freq. shanghai and sometimes peking. most of the pekining and shanghainese arent that bad. their quality is much better than those found in the singapore streets who tends to come from the rural area or developing part of china?such as Hunan, hubei, henan, hebei,liaoning etc. i think there aint much guangzhou or zhejiang ppl coz these provinces are developing much faster and offer better job opportunity.
What singapore can attract is only those from developing province as mention above. Hence the quality of such ppl will be lower. In the first place who let them into singapore? our very govt! why blame them, it is our natural human instinct to take advantage of any system.
if you can migrate to australia, would you like to bring along all family should their migration system allows you to? -
This open door policy adopted is just one the many fucked up policies by the government... If the citizens are given more respect and appreciation by the government, I believe things may be much more tolerable...

look, there will always be bad eggs. Its just that China is a big place with a huge population. Hence, number of evil-doers will definitely have a multiplier effect. And have u ever noticed that people tend to fixate on negative news? Bad news such as school shoot-outs, fake baby milk powder, terrorism acts gets eaten up by the public and debated about for days, months even. another point is, China is seriously, under the spotlight nowofdays. Too much i must say, its taking up space in the news that are better suited for other events.

Just give them time, things will change. The Chinese government is paying a lot of attention to the food safety issue, they cracked down illegal factories, small stores, announce that most of domestic products dont even meet the national standards after an inspection, all manufacturers now have been told to put quality first. And recently China central television CCTV went undercover and discovered the tainted steamed buns and reported to the nation and the world, highlighting China's food problem. At least, these safety, food problems are not being ignored but being addressed instead. I have to say that the recent food, products scares worldwide is not really bad for China at all, it actually help China to realise its problems and correct them.
And how many developing countries are better than China ?? I am pretty sure there are many other developing countries having problems like China or even worse but they are gonna have to live with those problems forever because nothing there to warn or alert them like these global food scares recently. -

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) --The recent widely publicized report of meat buns with cardboard fillings is a hoax and the TV scenario maker has been detained by the police, the Beijing TV Station has said.
The TV station apologized in a footage Wednesday evening for airing the staged report produced with a home DV by a temporary employee surnamed Zi on its Life Channel.
In the announcement, Beijing TV Station said airing of the so-called problematic meat buns with a column known as "Transparency"; on July 8 had sparked off grave concern in the society.
Workers from the municipal departments of industry and commerce, and food safety immediately carried out a thorough inspection on breakfast stands across the city.
Local police began to step in for investigation after the municipal industrial, commercial and food safety watchdog failed to find any of the problematic meat buns mentioned in the investigative TV report.
Through investigation, the police discovered Zi, a temporary employee of the Transparency column, using a pseudo name of Hu Yue, twice went to the No.13 courtyard inside Shizikou Village, Taiyanggong Township of Chaoyang District, and asked four migrant workers who had been preparing breakfast there to make meat buns for him under the excuse of buying more breakfast for other migrant workers at a construction site, according to the TV announcement.
Zi brought in pork, flour and cardboards he bought from the open market and instructed the breakfast makers to make "baozi" or meat buns using meat fillings produced from pork mixed with crushed cardboard. He used a home DV to film the entire process, turned in after some editing, and used trickish means to get his work aired.
The television station said in the announcement the Life Channel had failed to strictly examine the content of the report, resulting in the airing of a faked report which had in turn produced a bad influence in the society, and should therefore apologize to the general public.
