Housebrand products cheaper than regular brands: CASE survey By Foo Xiao Xuan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 24 July 2007 1652 hrs
SINGAPORE: Housebrand products tend to be cheaper than regular brands, according to the latest price survey of household items by the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE).
It advises price-sensitive consumers, who are not particular about brands, to look to housebrand products as cheaper alternatives to regular brands.
Another observation is the possible lack of transparency at some supermarkets.
CASE staff found some chains offering certain items at special prices at selected outlets.
Some list items as being on promotion or discounted without indicating the usual price.
CASE has advised consumers to shop around to compare prices to ensure they get the best deals.
It is also encouraging supermarkets to list the usual price of products when they are advertising promotional items to help consumers assess the potential savings on the products.
The price survey covers about 100 common household items including beverages and bodycare products sold at major super market chains - Carrefour, Cold Storage, NTUC Fairprice, Giant and Sheng Siong.
Consumers can view the results from the price survey on its website at www.case.org.sg. - CNA/yy
