“Five-day Work Week? Not for his teacher wife"

EVEN though the Singapore Government has been advocating a five-day work week,
especially in the Civil Service, it remains to be seen whether it is being implemented on
the ground.
My wife, a primary-school teacher, has to go back for school-related matters on many
Saturdays. I understand that most teachers need to go back to school on Saturday for
major school activities (about four Saturdays a year). Besides these, my wife has five or
six Saturdays burnt because of Co-Curricular Activities (CCA). So, in total, there are
nine or 10 Saturdays burnt in a year.
It is even more infuriating when she can't claim time off and travel expenses on the
Saturdays she spent on CCA.
In addition to her CCA involvement on Saturdays, she has CCA on a normal weekday
afternoon. So, at times, she may be involved in CCA twice a week. Thus she ends up
having to prepare for the coming week's lessons on Sunday.
I do not understand how we are going to contribute to the nation's birth rate if she is so
stressed out. <========
People often comment that she spends more time with her pupils than with our children.
It makes me wonder why the five-day work week was implemented in the first place. -

This is old news.
Unfortunately, a system that is already rotten will find it difficult to purge itself of a decapitating disease that has cripped the ministry of education for so long.
The original concept of giving civil servants a 5-day week was simply to ensure that family time was given its due over the weekend. Unfortunately, this act, which began with the best of intentions, has regurgitated into the same cesspool it supposedly grew out of - whatever was our govt thinking when they implemented such a scheme without the means to enforce it?
In the meantime, the STU plays the role of a bootlicking troll, pandering to the wishes of MOE instead of fighting for appropriate rights.
Should we have any belief in a system that has failed? Perhaps whistleblowing is the only way out now.... -
Many jobs now also dont have 5 days work week,like in sales line,servicing industry etc.The government only use their mouth n talk,they dont have the guts to implement it.Why?They scare the investors will run away.Those boot-licking PAP leaders.

Like I've said many times; what the Gov says or advocates, is always different in Real LIfe....
So, whatever they say in the papers, I'd regard it as mere Lip Service... -

Discuss with yr wife to get pregnant and she will be given lots of special treatment plus 3 mths off.

They need to prepare schoolwork, be there with the kids and be contactable 24/7 (phone/email/msn) -_-". There are also the ECA, Teacher's meetings blah blah blah blah blah. And all these affect their performance report.
I'm not a teacher but have friends who are.
I think that guy should really wake up and look around him

Then what about Police, Civil Defence, Doctor.... etc. If Every Man, Woman and Child all demand to only have 5 day week...... How is S'pore to function
My shift in SMRT is 7 day work, 2 day off..... till it reach 5 day work, 3 day off. 7-2, 7-2, 7-2, 5-3..... I have 5 type of shift - early morning, normal morning, normal afternoon, late afternoon, mid-shift, split shift, night shift. I too want just 5 day week + confirm weekend off..... but do anyone here thinks that the transport system could be shut down every week end.
It is really very sad that our teachers are over work....... but could anyone here say that the rest of us are having a 'easy' life There is just no way in a modern country like S'pore to have 5 day work week for all worker......
And i agree with HyperFocal on the point of Govt propose Work Life Balances thingy is just FU*KIN BULLSH*T

But alot of us know that they have a tendecy to just say and not act, at least not much anyways.

And it is also because teacher nowadays don't just teach.
They're all boggled down by administrative work which takes up alot of theirtime.
Oh and look what happened to "teach less, learn more".. This goes to show lots of what they say are actually bullcrap. -
There are other ways of implementing Human Resources than to push 1 person to do multiple jobs till everyone just burn out and break down.
Its just that the system and management is not flexible enough admit the problem and implement changes. Most SG Managers really lack ability and professionalism. -

yeah generally they're more slack during sch holiday periods, but they're boggled down with lotsa stupid stuff. -

hell... The gov can advocate for even 1 day work week for all they want when in real fact, if you don't want to work 6 days week plus OT on most days, then the employer will find ways to get rid of you. With little labor law protection plus minimum union support, employees are for the slaughter!
Talk about 5 days work-week is cheap.
Once again, the 66% must be very very very happy AGAIN! (wonder if they were slaves in their previous lives)... hmm -
At the end of the day, it all depends on how your wife ultimately wants to plan her time...... She could be suffering from 'Ostrich Syndrome'..... seeking refuge in her work and using it as an excuse to live her personal life. Are there any issues between the 2 of you....? Try talking and working it out together......

I think as a school teacher, you are also entitle to enjoy school holiday right? Not all of course, but I am sure it is more than enough to cover for the 10 sats
