Fare hike for public transport in October?

A well presented article and hence, easy on the eyes.
It presents a chronology of public transport fare hikes since 1990 and how SMRT and SBSTransit have continually seen their profits rise every year.
Therefore, is it really due to soaring oil prices that have prompted the operators to increase fares or is it due to monetary greed?

To provide better service so they increase the fare, this is a common excuse they give every year. It is more of making profits than any other reasons that gahmen approve the application of the hike every year. I don't remember any one year they did not increase the fare. don't think it is justified to increase the fare every year. Was helping to do a project on transport in a consulting firm, somewhere in the text it said that public transport is provided by government to serve the nation, therefore making profit should not be their priority instead service to the people should be the priority.Originally posted by Rock^Star:A well presented article and hence, easy on the eyes.

So, well, it is no surprise that there is going to be another hike in fares in October. Afterall, the gahmen have been increasing the essentials these past few months!!! They are doing the usual, "squeezing" every cent out of the people of Singapore. GReedy!!! -

ya, still have the cheek to raise the fares. Just two days ago, I flagged the bus and the bus driver pretended not to see me and drove away. Decrease in bus & mrt frequency has been happening before the fare hike a few year ago. You can see that sometime the buses is so packed. Worst still the bus is extremely slow moving and can have accident some more. The green light is still green but they purposely slow down for it to turn red.
I missed the two buses coming at the same time. At least you can choose the less crowded bus. I don't think fare hike is going to improved anything. At most included more air-con bus station, less buses coming, more old dirty buses.
They are doing it, so that more people can complains. So they have more reason to increase prices by saying excuses like to improve service, increase in oil price, etc. Let see what excuse they will give to increase price next time.
There are more talents in the fields, but most are greedy, selfish talents. -

monopoly can make whatever decisions without regard to any person they service. Now naturally, a private monopoly will then make only profit decisions
and their customers because the customers has no where else to get the service, monopolies do not need to improve the service or do anything.
given the constrain in land and current road/rail infrastructure, there is a limit to the bus/train to 'improve'. In so far, there are service lines changes and reductions in the name of "reducing" waste and fare hikes approved in the name of helping to stop these monopolies stop bleeding.

There are people who have accepted the annual increment for the fares. Some singaporeans are very accommodating they fail to realise that it is not necessary for the increase every year. -

our so called public tpt is a listed co.since its listed, it gotta generate profit just like any other listed co..hence, the board need to look aft the int of the shareholders etc....fare hike is the best way to generate more profit
