I went about checking their reports and here's what i gotten going through SMRT's Annual 2007 Report and SBS's 1st quarter 2007 report:
Profit for SMRT Per Passenger per AVERAGE trip:
Total Profit: 103.5million
Total Ridership for the Year: 434,868,000(434.868 million)
Average Profit EVERY Ride: 0.238 = 23.8 cents
Profit for SMRT BUS per Passenger per average trip
Total Profit: 5.6million
Total Ridership for the Year: 270,253,000(270.253 million)
Average Profit EVERY Ride: 0.0207 = 2.1 cents
Proft for SBS BUSES 1st Quarter 2007:
Total Profit: 10.2 million
Total Ridership for the 1st quarter: 194,993,370 ( 194.993 million)
(derived Daily Average ridership for jan-mar 2007 * 30 per month)
Average Profit EVERY Ride: 0.0523 = 5.23 cents
SBS NELine 1st Qtr 2007:
Total Profit: 1.6million (Advert(400k) total=2 million)
Total Ridership: 26,279,790(26.279 million)
Average Profit EVERY Ride: 0.0608 = 6.08 cents (7.61 cents)
Hence here's the conclusion:
For SMRT: Every 1 Cent increase per ridership:
1 cent increase in MRT fares = 1 / 23.8cents = 4.2% profit margin increase
1 cent increase in Bus fares = 1/ 2.1 cents = 47.6% profit margin increase
For SBS: Every 1 Cent increase per ridership=
1 cent increase in Bus fares = 1/5.23 cents = 19.1% profit margin increase
1 cent increase in NELine fares = 1/6.08 =16.45% (13.1) profit margin increase.
Note: Percentages given is for EVERY 1 CENT ($0.01) Increase in fares.
As you can see here: The undeserving culprit is SMRT Train services which is enjoying a mountain of profit for every ride. That profit even averaged out with every bus ride ( total per ride with SMRT) gives:
A profit of (23.8+2.1) / 2 = 12.45 cents per ride of SMRT
In GREAT contrast: SBS has per ride
A profit of (5.23 + 6.08 ) / 2 = 5.655 cents per ride of SBS
The solution for PTC is by the following recommendation:
DECREASING SMRT fares by 15 cents to 8.8 cents per ride. (Core business)
Profit for the year would be instead: a Modest 38.26 Million
Not increasing Smrt bus fares. To maintain a 2.1 cent profit per ride.(Side business)
Profit for the year would remain at 10.2 million
Not increasing SBS bus fares to maintain at 5.23 cents (Core business)
Profit for the year would remain at 40.79 million
Not increasing NELine fares to maintain 6.08 cents per ride (side business)
Profit for NEline for the year would remain at an acceptable: 6.4 million
Total Annual Profit Performance for EACH company would be Slightly below $50 million dollars
Profit Taking by Temasek from SMRT alone will be @ 55% = 27.5 million dollars for the year.
Not bad for

Privatise

Public

transport company.
I rest my case.
P.S. for nitpickers: This profit has already taken into account bus/train/parts maintainence/replacement costs/ AND TAX. This is PURE -PROFIT- .Thank you.
