Actually, we have some of the largest indirect taxes in the world. Just look how much the vehicle tax and property tax is. I can't recall the figures but seeing how cars here can be so expensive, it tells you a fair bit.Originally posted by Ponders:maurizio13
Not that i want to go against you... but is it possible to gain some data outside from what is published?
We can't simply go by median wages, percentage of taxes, etc.
I think it would be fairer like, after mandatory deductions, how much do they have to pay Cantons, Cities, and municipal taxes.
Not to mention other monthly deductions (if any) for healthcare, union dues, etc.
For most singaporeans, a part of their pay goes to CPF, Tax, Town Council, etc.. so we need to have equal data...
singapore might have a lower median wage because there are more ppl in the mid-to-lower income groups as compared to Switzerland.
Mmmh but it's a bad sign when the middle-income group is also seen as pulling down the mean income.Originally posted by Ponders:it means we might arrived at this figure due to the population distribution rather than the fact ppl are being paid lower.
Oh! Isn't cost of living related to standard of living? If its not relevant, why do you even post it here?Originally posted by miserable:Oh gosh, what simpleton thou art ???![]()

Why only indirect tax? Are we really the highest?Originally posted by Fingolfin_Noldor:Actually, we have some of the largest indirect taxes in the world. actually it works both ways isn't it? there might be a huge pool of rich or poor pushing the statistic up or pulling it down for both countries. Not to forget the creative accounting and tax evasions which prevent an accurate collection of data. Its never easy to get a fair figure.Originally posted by Ponders:maurizio13

if u are talking about percentage wise i will say maybe but if u are talking about the total amount collected i will say why not. Anyway these are not important what is important is the burden the tax have on the people. Are they able to manage their day to day life comfortably with the tax rate?Originally posted by Mat Toro:Why only indirect tax? Are we really the highest?
What we are interested in really is total tax. How do we rank on total tax? Can our indirect tax be more than say income tax of Switzerland?
Who is this "we"? No one here except you is trying to hijack the thread and define it at your whim.Originally posted by Mat Toro:Why only indirect tax? Are we really the highest?

Mr Mat Toro, it is quite obvious you do not understand what is the differences between Standard of Living and Cost of Living.Originally posted by Mat Toro:Oh! Isn't cost of living related to standard of living? If its not relevant, why do you even post it here?
total percentage wise, we are definitely much lower. Our cost of living are also much lower. PPP wise, not much difference. So what do you think?Originally posted by NewAge:if u are talking about percentage wise i will say maybe but if u are talking about the total amount collected i will say why not. In Singapore, on top of the income tax, a portion of our salaries are being taken away by the gov as CPF as well. For other countries, the gov provide a high standard of healthcare for it's people old age, whereas in Singapore, the gov just return the CPF which we have contributed over the years back to us to take care of ourselves.Originally posted by Mat Toro:Are you willing to pay that kind of taxes?
Currently and locally, for all the Taxes we are obligated to pay, WHAT do we get in return?Originally posted by Mat Toro:Are you willing to pay that kind of taxes?
