Lee Kuan Yew: IndonesiaÂ’s Economic Prospects Good

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:SingaporeÂ’s Senior Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, has predicted that IndonesiaÂ’s economic prospects in the next two years will be good.
IndonesiaÂ’s government, said Lee, will be able to meet the economic growth target of seven percent in 2007 and nine percent in 2008.
“I’m optimistic that Indonesia can reach the targets as it has good economic management,” said Lee after meeting Vice President Jusuf Kalla yesterday (25/7).
The meeting in the vice presidentÂ’s office lasted from 11.30am to 1pm WIB (Indonesian Western Time).
According to the former prime minister of Singapore, within the next five years or during the next administration period, Indonesia will be able to catch up with Thailand.
“Thus, manpower provisions must be arranged in order to be able to attract more investment.” In order to attract investors, according to Lee, legal certainty is required.
Consistency in implementing regulations is very important so that investors remain comfortable in Indonesia.
“Investors predict their investment not only for short-term, but up until five to ten years to come,” he said.
Foreign investors, said Lee, tend to refer to United States and Japan.
If American and Japanese investors still stay in a country and the number even increases, there is a possibility that other investors will be interested in investing in that country.
Kalla accepted LeeÂ’s input.
He said he considered that from the economic progress Indonesia has reached, relations with other countries were important for supporting economic growth.
“We’re optimistic that economic growth can be reached if regional economies were also maintained with strong cooperation,” he said.
According to Kalla, neither of them discussed the agreement of defense cooperation (DCA) between Indonesia and Singapore.
Lee said his visit was not related to the defense agreement, which is still being debated by Indonesian politicians.
“As a country, Singapore cooperates with Indonesian government, not with political parties,” he said.

Plans to quarry for granite on Pulau Ubin being deferred: BCA

The government has deferred plans to begin quarrying for granite on Pulau Ubin following a significant improvement in the granite supply situation in the last two months.
The decision to carry out limited quarrying works at the Kekek Quarry in Pulau Ubin was announced in April this year after Indonesia, a major supplier of granite to construction companies in Singapore, banned the export of granite.
In a statement on Saturday, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) says there is now adequate granite supply coming in from both nearby and new distant sources in the region.
There has not been any drawdown from the national stockpile since May and prices have also moderated and stabilised.
BCA says a tonne of granite, which is a major component of concrete, now costs between S$23 and S$29.
Concrete prices have also dipped from a high of $200 per metre cube when supply was disrupted, to about S$140 to S$150 per metre cube.
Over the past few months, preparatory works for reactivating the Kekek Quarry on Pulau Ubin had been carried out.
These included an environmental impact study, conducting water quality tests and regulatory reviews. BCA says these have been a useful experience, and have given a better understanding of the process involved in reactivating a quarry. But although there is no need to begin quarrying for granite on Pulau Ubin for the time being, BCA says it is keeping all options open.
And the reactivation of local quarries remains a part of contingency plans to ensure resilience in the supply of essential construction materials. - CNA/ch -
I am taken aback by this criticism from Indonesia. Just how much of a democracy is the Indonesian state? Indigenous groups wanting independence getting crushed by government troops? Military figureheads dominating much of Indonesia's politics? The greater & more brutal lack of equality amongst citizens & ethnicities?
Indonesia trying to give a lesson on democracy can be likened to Hitler giving a lesson on humanity. Indonesia will not be a democratic nation for eons to come. -
Hitler was voted into power by a democracy too.
