SINGAPORE: Both SBS Transit and SMRT have applied to the Public Transport Council to raise bus and train fares.
The exact fare increment will be determined later, using a standard formula, in this annual fare revision exercise.
Energy costs have been a big drain on the two big public transport operators.
Both companies have quoted rises of between 20 and 26 percent in this area alone.
SBS Transit said manpower costs – its single largest cost component – have also increased by about S$12 million during the year, while SMRT said it would lose about S$11 million due to increases in GST and employer's CPF contributions.
In making their applications to the Public Transport Council, both companies said they would not touch concession fares.
SMRT added that it would be asking for small increases in EZ-Link fares for buses, adult train EZ-link fares and longer single-trip train journeys.
This year's increment formula, which is linked to the performance of Singapore's economy, is capped at 1.8 percent, slightly higher than last year's 1.7 percent.
The formula was devised to ensure that there are small and regular increases, instead of big jumps every few years.
Both transport operators said they are mindful of how fare increases affect the lower income, so they would be considering funding schemes to offset the impact on any hike.
Separately, the government has announced that S$10 million has been set aside over three years to help the needy cope with fare increases.
The fare changes, if accepted by the Public Transport Council, will be announced next month and will kick in by October.

Well good for you.... we now only need 199 999 more person to NOT use the trains & buses on the same time and day for your 'boycott' to have meaning..... Personally.... i doubt those on top would hardly notice your 'little boycott'. According to SMRT, if GST and CPF increases result in Bus Fare increases because of 11 million losses, so if can back-track, dun increase GST nor CPF lor.
Back-tracked, GST must increase to tilt the balance and help the poor. CPF must increase becos last time CPF decreased when economy is bad.
Last time CPF decreased, SMRT must be making more money lor. Now CPF increased, SMRT is losing money, so now must increase bus fare lor.
GST increase is more eat-strength, becos it means everything increase 2%. Soon bus fare increase, only affects my transportation by 1.8% increment, less eat-strength lor. -

GST profiteering cases rise to highest level this year
Channel NewsAsia - Sunday, July 15SINGAPORE: The number of cases involving companies investigated for GST profiteering has shot up sharply to its highest level this year.
Latest statistics from the Committee Against Profiteering show the number of cases reported increased from 40 cases for the whole of June - to 57 this month (as of 12 July).
The bulk of the cases (36) relate to food - 23 concern stalls and 13 restaurants.
14 involve other companies such as carparks and a chain pharmacy.
Eight cases were deemed not relevant by the Committee.
The GST went up on 1 July.
In a separate survey covering close to 1300 stalls from hawker centres and coffee shops in June and earlier this month, 4.8 per cent (61 stalls) were found to have raised their prices.
Nearly half of them (27) came from central Singapore.
The least number came from the north-eastern zone.
The Statistics Department says the increases range from 10 to 50 cents.
Lower-priced items, like drinks, went up by 10 cents, while those selling at higher prices tended to increase by a bigger margin of 50 cents.
The survey was conducted 11-15 June and 2-6 July. - CNA/yy

Anyway, I'm not in Singapore so this was never an issue to me, but it is an issue to those people that are already affected by the 2% rise in GST. -

You have seen what happened if you vote for the PAP. Are you progressing along with the nation or are the PAP leaders moving ahead themselves and leaving Singaporeans behind?

Those very people who is telling us to 'protest', boycott..... etc, are themselve NOT here to lead or face the consequence with us.
..... So much easier to 'Talk' from far away......
