Have you noticed that these days, NDP is used as a tool to attract more new immigrants than to celebrate the achievements of Singaporeans?
If you don't believe me, there was actually an advert on TV about a new citizen originally from Turkey extolling the virtues of living in Singapore. I believe the ad was related to the NDP if I can recall correctly.
Attracting people to come live in Singapore is one thing, but to use a national celebration to achieve that aim?
That's like George Bush asking non Americans to become US citizens during his Independence Day speech.
Is it appropriate?

if you are against PAP why boycott singapore? singapore is not PAP. neither is PAP= singapore. as long as you are singaporeans, we should enjoy. maybe for this 9th august, we should forget all political issues and just spent a good day celebrating it. afterall they very reason why we criticise the govt is for the betterment of singapore.

That why that is a lot less Singaporeans than last year during NDP yesterday. The bus I board was crowded with Indian and china foreigners, from the languages they speak, and every bus stop , the bus drive pass, it is full of foreigners. Singaporean are mainly old people. One of the Indian board the bus had not bath, he smell. They are here to stay.
From what I see, more construction workers is recruited than talents. A double decker bus can filled the foreigner from yesterday situation. The bus is packed already, so a lot foreigners can't get in.
Taking buses will be always be full during peak hour. People are going to wait a much longer time to board the buses when the population increases. -
The show will appeal to foreigners. The children will love it too but what do they know about patriotism?
It's a pity that you had to put up with the smell but I think it has to do with their diets, the spices. Some caucasians described the smell like those coming from a dead man. -

I know of people working as waiters getting $1,000 a week, a month would be around $4,000 to $5,000.

It's alot like those Chinamen coming over Singapore to work, but of course Singapore is the last destination of choice. If they had other choice like Japan, USA, Germany, Australia, Hawaii, etc, they won't choose Singapore.
Your statement is equivalent to a Chinaman telling his comrades in China, that Singapore might be a good place to holiday, but not a good place to work. A typical Chinaman will get around RMB 1,000 to RMB 2,000 in China, depending on the industry he works in. In Singapore, if he gets SGD 1,000, it will translate to RMB 5,000. You have tunnel vision syndrome.
Singapore is the only country for you, if Singapore does not exist you can't survive in other 1st world democracies like Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, etc.
You are a typical equivalent North Korean singing praises about their regime. -
