I have no idea what is wrong with you people. Is it jealousy that drives you people to bash 'elites'? Or is it because of herd mentality, whereby you guys are just trying to fit in with the rest?
You know it is getting really ridiculous that every single action/behavior that is frowned upon can be attributed to one being an 'elite'.
That fact is, just because them 'elites' are born with a silver spoon up their mouth doesn't make them any much different from you people.
Yes, there are arrogant rich people, but there also are arrogant poor people. There are ill-mannered rich kids, and so are there ill-mannered poor kids.
You elite-bashing people think that it's fun to put down the elites, but remember what happened with the Tax Laws, the very promise of bringing down the rich ended up a curse for the middle and lower class. The rich were never affected as they were safe under the protection of corporations.

Well, it's a move away from heavy corporate taxation. I am not an economist, but this move may bring in more foreign investment which would drive up our exchange rates and make our imported goods cheaper. In other words, this could very well negate the effects of the extra 2% in terms of imported goods.
However, all these are just theory. We'll know soon enough how this change will affect our economy. Of course, I'll be royally pissed off if this move means that the government will receive more fundings.

As I said earlier, the increase in tax rate has a far reaching effect on the economy as a whole. It will have much effects on our GDP, exchange rate, bank interest rate and fiscal/monetary policy. Raising the tax can raise our purchasing power, or depress it. It is not as simple as raising tax = depressing purchasing power. We need to look at the macroeconomic effects of this tax increase to determine how much the citizens will gain/lose.

What I think most of us are doing here is just bashing specific elites...I myslef am against indiscriminate bashing...just people like Wee ShuMin....thats all
I do have friends who are rich but they are also humble in their ways...so let's just focus on those who are downright arrogant... -

Elites = JC-ians = Scholars = Uni-ians = Rich = Celebrities = PAP = Wine connoisseurs?
I believe it is fair enough to say that Singapore is a meritocratic society and that everyone has an equal chance of entering into JCs, Unis, and taking up scholarships.
You don't need to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth to be among these group of people.
Of course, whether these group of people will move on to become elites is a hard thing to say. So to assume and stereotype would be wrong. -

I know so many so many RJC and HCI people who took scholarships even though their parents could easily afford an overseas education, just because they could. In the process, depriving other needy students who barely fail to qualify. Fair? Yes. Meritocracy? Yup.
And I have no idea how in the army some NSFs can literally earn 4x as much as their peers. It's national service(or slavery) for god's sake, conscription! Not a job or occupation that should pay by qualifications. Yes, there should be an incentives for commanders but most people are really sucking it up.

scholarships are awarded based on ability, not on need. Ultimately, it's fair but disappointing to the needy.
Those born with silver spoons obviously make up 80% of the population of the top schools, then go on to be scholars.
Oh, how do I know? Well I was from a top 3 secondary school and a top 3 JC. Unfortunately non-elite.

for two able guys, if one has the resources to achieve his dream, for eg, a overseas uni education, naturally scholarships can be given to the other chap who doesnt have the resources to do so
add more to the talent pool (a wrong choice of words..but nevertheless)
