Merit-scholarships were never meant to help the needy, but rather to motivate individuals who excel in academics.Originally posted by crimson soldier:I know so many so many RJC and HCI people who took scholarships even though their parents could easily afford an overseas education, just because they could. In the process, depriving other needy students who barely fail to qualify. Fair? Yes. Meritocracy? Yup.
so much unfounded arguments, i really don't know if you are kidding.[/b]Originally posted by the Bear:wherein they behave as if their fart don't stink and everyone around them, us proles, are here to be subservient to them..
Proles? Too much 1984 for you?
then there is usual patronising manner which says 'i'm better than you but i'm here because i have to be nice to you idiots.."
Inferiority complex?
now add to this unpalatable mix lau lee's veiled attempt at eugenics..
Conspiracy theories?
and sprinkle it with the inclination of the 'elite' to be totally divorced from reality while living it up in their ivory towers...
Which part of reality? The part about life being hard? Isn't that what everyone wants? To be divorced and taken away from the harshness of life? The rich had it lucky and are up there in their satin-laced ivory chairs, but there is no reason to discriminate them for where they stand. They got ahead of the rat race, and by hook or by crook it doesn't matter.
so, what goes on in the minds of the 'elite' is shown in the writings of that little brat girl.. and various other writings in the YPAP... and elsewhere...
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Are you suggesting that the PAP should clamp down further on freedom of speech?
we should... let the cold hard hand of reality slap their uncaring faces one day... until then, some bashing is to remind the rest of us proles who is the real enemy within...
Why not use actions instead of words?

You know it is getting really ridiculous that every single action/behavior that is frowned upon can be attributed to one being an 'elite'.
Elites get bashed because unlike the poor, they should know better and behave better... otherwise all that money and education is wasted on them and they deserve to be bashed...Originally posted by Where Is God:Everyone who lives a good life is a Wee Shu Min now, is it?
I have no idea what is wrong with you people. Is it jealousy that drives you people to bash 'elites'? Or is it because of herd mentality, whereby you guys are just trying to fit in with the rest?
You know it is getting really ridiculous that every single action/behavior that is frowned upon can be attributed to one being an 'elite'.
That fact is, just because them 'elites' are born with a silver spoon up their mouth doesn't make them any much different from you people.
Yes, there are arrogant rich people, but there also are arrogant poor people. There are ill-mannered rich kids, and so are there ill-mannered poor kids.
You elite-bashing people think that it's fun to put down the elites, but remember what happened with the Tax Laws, the very promise of bringing down the rich ended up a curse for the middle and lower class. The rich were never affected as they were safe under the protection of corporations.
So think twice before you shoot your mouth off, sheep.
Unfounded arguments? How would you call those unfounded arguments? The first statement was a question. There is no need to substantiate questions with proof. Answers need to be substantiated with proof, not questions. Are you really from planet Earth?Originally posted by Where Is God:

You're right - I didn't say what I meant, and I'll correct myself here. Ah, so it's a genuine question and not rhetorical, is it? In that case, the rest of the post that follows that question is utterly and completely invlaid when i answer that question with a "no".Originally posted by Where Is God:Can all the ills of the world, from picking one's nose to Gilles de la Tourette's, be attributed to one ebing an "elite"? The second example you provided is even worst. Did you not read the whole sentence and notice the word "can"? I did not use the word "must" but "can". That makes a whole world of difference between a narrow, unfounded assumptions and an open statement.
By the way, it's "worse", not "worst" - what kind of elite are you, slaughtering the English language the way you do?![]()

gee...merit scholarships never meant to help the needy. then have the scholarships for what? give more $ to the rich while taking more from the poor?Originally posted by Where Is God:Merit-scholarships were never meant to help the needy, but rather to motivate individuals who excel in academics.
Needy students who "fail to qualify", but wish to further their studies, should be going for student loans not scholarships. I know for a fact that NUS' student loans are rather easy to apply and qualify.

oh so u mean rich ppl going for scholarships, poor ppl going for loans? have u think of it this way? those ppl no money already still borrow money. cant pay up is their stuff being taken away by banks n govt. so in the end whu suffer? it's the poor ppl!Originally posted by Where Is God:Merit-scholarships were never meant to help the needy, but rather to motivate individuals who excel in academics.

so poor people like us have to take loans, slog it out, while the rich get $ for studying, and enjoy life?
what the fark would those elites need the scholarships for?

Ah, so you are saying that your point is that people assume that everyone who lives a good life is a Wee Shu Min. Well, isn't it stupid for you to assume that people assume as such? Where's your proof that people make such assumptions?Originally posted by Where Is God:A rhetorical question is to bring forward a point, and in my case, the point being - Isn't it stupid for people to assume that everyone who lives a good life is an elitist?
No, you are so stupid goddamnit. Have you ever written an argumentative essay before. That is part of my thesis. You don't need proof for every single line you write in your thesis.Originally posted by Gedanken:Ah, so you are saying that your point is that people assume that everyone who lives a good life is a Wee Shu Min. First it's rhetorical, then you say it's just a question, and now you say it's a rhetorical. When are you going to stop pwning yourself, junior?
