Aug 18 marks citizenship day: DPM Wong
AUGUST this year will have two dates to mark Singapore's nationhood.
Apart from celebrating the Nation's birthday on Thursday, some brand new Singaporeans will be welcomed with a grand scale national ceremony on Aug 18 to give them their citizenship papers.
The National Citizenship ceremony is an effort to reinforce the significance of being a citizen here - not only among foreigners who choose to become Singaporeans but also among 'native' Singaporeans too.
Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng revealed this on Tuesday, at a National Day Observance ceremony at the Home Affairs Ministry.
Currently, new Singaporeans are sworn in with smaller scale ceremonies at the constituency grassroots level.
These will continue - the national-level ceremony will instead be more of a symbolic one with a selected group of new citizens receiving their citizenship certificates.
But DPM Wong, who oversees the National Population Secretariat, said that the National Ceremony is a first but 'significant' step to creating Singapore's own Citizenship Day.
Citizenship Days are celebrated in other parts of the world - like Australia and the US - where new citizens are celebrated and welcomed.
But all this is just part of a barrage of activities and efforts to encourage people to settle here.
For instance, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority has come up with a new information package for people considering becoming citizens or permanent residents.
In a large packet, flyers - chock full of information about the benefits of citizenship and the mechanics of application - are tiered alongside bright pictures of Singapore and the testimonies of four people who have taken up the Singapore citizenship.
If present citizenship-application trends keep up, Singapore can expect to add about 200,000 permanent residents and 40,000 citizens to its fold in the next five years.

As the Minister of Home Affairs put it:
"Some countries have experienced instability and disruptions because of divisions and friction between the local population and new immigrants. We must not go down that road. The integration of new immigrants into our community is therefore of vital importance," said the Home Affairs Minister.
I believe more credibility will be accorded to the New Immigrant in the event of any dispute/s and or complaint/s against locals...
When he says "We mustn't go down that road", I wonder, will the system become tuned to or for these New Citizens?
I have a feeling it will be...

the New is welcomed, the Native is neglected.
1. Singtel does that to its customers all the time
2. Some minister (I forgot who) once commented that the govt wants to attract those who migrate abroad back because it takes a lot of courage (and etc etc) to settle abroad, and these are the people they want to be in Singapore. What about us!

..... because most of us are planning to move to another country anyway.... so, the Govt might as well 'plan' ahead and 'import' new S'porean now lor....
In some sad irony..... S'porean are leaving because they felt that they are not as important as foreginer...... and Govt have to 'import' more foreginer because S'porean are leaving.....
And the wheels turns round & round........

I seriously DOUBT, that they will be as tolerant of the government's policies and their costly upkeep....
yes, they may have babies here, but observing many has taken Singapore as Stepping Stone, you think their 'babies' will grow up and stay?? Serve NS even???

I tell you, it will become like another Stop at Two, or Casino policy.. I see frantic government policy U-Turns up ahead... -
when they import those foreigners, the foreigners will be thankful to the government namely PAP. so during elections, due to the addition of this new singaporeans, the government expects to hold its control.
the older generations that support PAP are unable to vote from their graves, thus new loyalists are needed and they are from the foreigner turn PR or citizens. -

2) Friend B's husband got a job in Australia. B went there with him and their baby BOY (less boy to serve NS in future).
3) Friend C went to USA for further studies (master) and plan to settle there with S$120,000 (still counting)
4) Friend D, a teacher, plan either to go China for further studies or go Canada to work (depend which opportunity come first)
5) Friend E, a PR, die die don't want to be a Singapore citizen after serving NS. He said no point... prepare to go back to Malaysia after he grows old. He said Singapore is not a place to grow old.
6) Friend F got a rich China wife. He plans to migrate to China in future to set up business.
7) Friend G got a rich Indonesia wife. He plans to go Indonesia to help his father-in-law to oversee business.
8 Friend H, I, J, K ..... (a lot) got Malaysian wifes. Their wifes still retain their Malaysian passport. IF singapore cannot survive, their spouse still can retreat back to malaysian for a living....
If some people still living in wonder wonderland, i got nothing to say...
maybe their friends circle is not that big....
maybe all their friends work for government... so they don't know the outside world... don't blame them

How many will not feel the competition from this additional 2.5 million?
Even if you are marketable, this competition is still huge and real. As time pass, you get older. As time pass, more comes in.
