Oppss..you shouldnt use the word democracy here, because you are feeding them with reasons to write you another piece of recycled essay and reports from the internet saying the Singapore is ranked lowly in political freedom.Originally posted by Mat Toro:the problem with these anti govt elements is that they do not respect the opinion of the majority. MM Lee? What has his contribution got to do with what PM LHL is doing now?Originally posted by Gazelle:From the way they try to discredit MM Lee and his contribution to the country, I wont be surprise that they will be disrespectful to their boss, wife and even parents.

that's newOriginally posted by Gazelle:obviously you are too young and inexperience to know there not all beggers you see on the street are poor.
i guess we're no talking abt "fake monks" here......are u saying that everytime u were to see a beggar, u would assume that they are syndicatedOriginally posted by Gazelle:Havent you read those stories about fake monks begging for money in the day and sleeping with call girls at night? Plus, some of these beggars are actually run by syndicate and chinese temple is one of their favourite spot.

if you must know, the votes are indeed sliding.........they are having an above 50% votes simply because the older generation are still around. It will not be the case in another 10 - 15 years.Originally posted by Mat Toro:pay increased many times, even before elections. if its a real issue to the rakyat, pap would have been voted out.
We dont hate people who are pro-govt. we hate insensitive people who think that pple actually like to beg or live on the streets. such a condescending attitude cuts across political affiliations and are considered downright insulting to e human race.Originally posted by bigmouthjoe:Not that we hate them for supporting the Government, but you've seen some of the presumptious post by people like Mat.
Some 'pro-govt' camp do bring up good points, but Mat... neh.
In Japan, ppl also don't vote for which PM they want.... but the winning party will chose a person for PM among themselve...... I believe so does England, Malaysia, Aust..... etc.Originally posted by (human):People never vote LHL as prime minister, still want to tell the world it's democracy? I wonder why most pro-govt people here are usually insensitive...Originally posted by Lefleche:We dont hate people who are pro-govt. we hate insensitive people who think that pple actually like to beg or live on the streets. such a condescending attitude cuts across political affiliations and are considered downright insulting to e human race.
You have time and again evaded my question on what's your opinion of our dear PM offering to freeze his salary increase. And why did the other minister not offer to do that...? And finally, if our PM is willing to freeze his salary increase, why bother to even raise the issue of pay increase?Originally posted by Mat Toro:pay increased many times, even before elections. if its a real issue to the rakyat, pap would have been voted out.
The whole purpose of bringing up the minister salary scale is to help attract talents for the next generation of leaders. Please remember that when we say talent for minister job, we are talking about young and bright people who are capable for making similar if not more money than what our ministers are earning.Originally posted by eagle:You have time and again evaded my question on what's your opinion of our dear PM offering to freeze his salary increase. Who defines who is young and bright? Who defines whether they are capable of making more money elsewhere? We want to attract talent who are committed to serving and contributing to Singapore for the sake of doing it, not serving and contributing to Singapore for the sake of a high salary!Originally posted by Gazelle:The whole purpose of bringing up the minister salary scale is to help attract talents for the next generation of leaders. As for why other ministers are not freezing their salary? That is because the ultimate goal of the pay hike is to ensure that there will be a future generation of great leaders in this country, not to proof who is more committed to the country.
1) Just take a look at the profile of our ministers to get a clue of who they are and why they are choosen to lead this country. http://www.cabinet.gov.sg/CabinetAppointments/index.htmOriginally posted by eagle:Who defines who is young and bright? I believe that the pay hike is indirectly linked to our next general election; a greater election deposit is needed to run for election. This may further limit the amount of opposition that the incumbent will have at the next election.
1) That's the problem... Does excellent certs and resumes means you can do well as a government? Do bear in mind that the Cabinet is only a small proportion of the government; but how about most of the backbenchers? Are they chosen/voted in because they are good, or are they in because they form a GRC group with our dear Cabinet ministers?Originally posted by Gazelle:1) Just take a look at the profile of our ministers to get a clue of who they are and why they are choosen to lead this country. http://www.cabinet.gov.sg/CabinetAppointments/index.htm
2) Would you sign on as a regular in the Police force so that Singapore will have zero crime? Or would you prefer to pursue your dream and ambition in the private sectors?
3) I dont see who this pay hike in linked to the next election but I do believe that if PAP desperately need to defend their seats, there are 101 ways to do it, dont need to do something that has so much negative publicity.
I agree with the GRC to a small extent... I can't think of any other way to ensure a good representation... But mega GRCs? It's a definite no-no.Originally posted by Rock^Star:Remove the GRC and let every citizen vote for their candidate of choice.
Practise democracy by staging live political debates every month. Keep the citizens informed and educated. Let them judge.
Let's see whether there's still a 66.6 then.
1) That is not a problem, that is an opportunity for young and bright people to step forward and serve the country, because the rewards is there.Originally posted by eagle:1) That's the problem... 2) If my dream and ambition was to help Singapore achieve a even lower crime rate, I would sign on as the Police regular. In my case, it's not like I would have nothing to do if I don't; I would do things that interest me, even though it is not in my interest. For others, I cannot say.
3) Election deposit equal MP's monthly pay. So for a GRC of 5 pple, for an election deposit of 65k sgd, it is now raised to 78k (supposed only 20% pay hike). This makes it even harder for the opposition to compete. Imagine the amount of publicity you can gain with that 13k
1) That is a problem. It doesn't mean that they are young and bright enough. In fact, many are, as I have said, backbenchers in the parliament. They are there because of mega-GRCs, they are there because they help PAP to be the majority in the parliament.Originally posted by Gazelle:1) That is not a problem, that is an opportunity for young and bright people to step forward and serve the country, because the rewards is there.
2) IF you dont want to, how can you expect others will? And how can a government operate with so many 'IF' in the plans?
3) There are already so many supporter of opposition in this forum, why should we be worried about fund? Unless of course these people are NATO.
1) We are talking about ministers, not MP arent we?Originally posted by eagle:1) That is a problem. It doesn't mean that they are young and bright enough. 2) This is totally twisting the argument, and getting out of point.
3) Supporter of opposition doesn't mean got funds for the opposition. Most of us could perhaps only contribute a few dollars, and the rest (students like me) do not even have much savings yet. If you do your calculations, each election candidate will need to get a sponsorship of $5 from more than 3000 people just to make up the election deposit. This is excluding banners and other publicity campaigns.
1) Ministers have the power of the majority in the government because of the backbenchersOriginally posted by Gazelle:1) We are talking about ministers, not MP arent we?
2) I am not sure if you could call it twisted because the facts is that a country or well managed company cannot be managed with so many IF especially when it comes to nurturing future leaders.
3) Lets not speculate if none of us have been involve in any election campaign.
