Human Trafficking & Modern-day Slavery
Republic of Singapore [ Country-by-Country Reports ]
The Republic of Singapore consists of the island of Singapore and about 60 small adjacent islands at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, SE Asia [map]. Singapore city, the capital, largest city, and chief port, is administratively coextensive with the republic and the distinction between the two has virtually disappeared. Singapore has a highly developed and successful free market economy, enjoys a remarkably open and corruption-free environment, stable prices, and a per capita GDP equal to that of the Big 4 West European countries. The economy depends heavily on exports, particularly in electronics and manufacturing.
[b]Singapore is a destination country for women and girls trafficked for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation. A small number of foreign domestic workers in Singapore face seriously abusive labor conditions that amount to involuntary servitude. Some women from Thailand, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (P.R.C.), and Indonesia who travel to Singapore voluntarily for prostitution or other work are deceived or coerced into sexual servitude. Some Singaporean men travel to countries in the region for child sex tourism. - U.S. State Dept Trafficking in Persons Report, June, 2007 [full country report]
I didn't know there..
anyway, not only girls are being kidnapped and being exploited for prostitution. Small boys are also being kidnapped...
it's against Human Right, basic meaning of life and freedom.[/b]

In europe, over 2millions womens from the slavic region are trafficked into the other european nations and this provide criminals syndicate with a annual profits of 38mill.
Most ladies re from albania and russia.
To make matter worst,International peace keeping troops and the american forces stationed at kosovo are visiting the brothels and engaging with minor.
I don't know what to say..
These troops are there to ensure stability of the Country and to bring down brothels but they are feeding the human trafficking market.
Local kosovo police are also corrupted and there are almost no laws in place.[the country has just went from communist to democracy]
I pity these women and children who will never see their family, experience love and humanity anymore.
God knows how many thousands have died from STD and abuses....
I'll l tackle it when i join Interpol in the future!Originally posted by mindcow:so sad...

[b]Human Trafficking
Akha Woman Imprisoned in Singapore's
Changi Prison - Why Does Singapore Imprison the Victims of Trafficking?
Why Does Thailand Allow Akha Women To Be Trafficked?
The Imprisonment of Ms. Meitinee Wongsa. Changi Prison ID S12369. She is now to be transfered to Portsdown Prison.
We request her release!
We Request She NOT Be Deported!
Ms. Amue Athu Released from Prison in Singapore, Destination Unkown.
Our message to Ms. Wongsa:
We keep fighting for you, so people know how Akha women get trafficked, how the enlightened systems all ignore what has happened to them, ignore the brothels, ignore the traffickers, business as usual. And if we walked back to your village, where I have been more than once, I could ask the Thai authorities, why they take the rice lands of the Akha people?
Thailand just doesn't get it, and neither would it appear, does Singapore.
Now an interesting situation is coming to light in the case of Ms. Wongsa. It appears that Singapore "allows" women to come into the country to "solicit". They make no note of who they are or if they are trafficked from what we can tell. Apparently Singapore needs people to come into the country to meet the needs of Singapore men who can't get enough in their own country. And then when Singapore is done with these women, they send them home, or send them home early if they don't work out.
We have contacted the Singapore Embassy and Ambassador in the US, the ICA in Singapore, an MP in Singapore, Amnesty International and a number of individuals and agencies regarding this case. We are asking that her case be reviewed and that Akha women are not made to pay the price for either trafficking or unethical Agents who put them in these situations. We are asking that she be released and NOT deported from Singapore.
Please contact the Singapore Embassy regarding this case.

so wat if these girls come willingly to earn money from sex then claim to be victims when they are caught ? would that mean they can get away without being punished ?

so the problem lies in the source country, not the destination.Originally posted by boka:How do u tell if the girls are here willingly or conceded into performing acts aginst her own will?
The problem of tackling human trafficking is due to the cultural and language barriers.
These girls are taught by their 'owners' to fear law enforcement so that they can shut off their every contact with the outside world.
Little do these gals know that the law enforcement are the only ones who are able to pull them out of their plight.
Of course apart from this, the traffickers threatens their family back at hometown.
There are few questions that when asked can shed some light on wheather they enter the trade willingly or by forced.
1: Do they have their passport at hand?
2: are they allowed to move freely at will?
3: Do they keep their wages or are their wages held fr their debt bondage?
Victim Identification
A victim of trafficking may look like many of the people you help every day. You can help victims of trafficking get the assistance they need by looking beneath the surface for the following clues:
Evidence of being controlled
Evidence of an inability to move or leave job
Bruises or other signs of battering
Fear or depression
Non-English speaking
Recently brought to this country from Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada, Africa or India
Lack of passport, immigration or identification documentation
Traffickers use various techniques to keep victims enslaved. Some traffickers keep their victims under lock and key. However, the more frequent practice is to use less obvious techniques including:
Debt bondage – financial obligations, honor-bound to satisfy debt
Isolation from the public – limiting contact with outsiders and making sure that any contact is monitored or superficial in nature
Isolation from family members and members of their ethnic and religious community
Confiscation of passports, visas and/or identification documents
Use or threat of violence toward victims and/or families of victims
The threat of shaming victims by exposing circumstances to family
Telling victims they will be imprisoned or deported for immigration violations if they contact authorities
Control of the victims' money, e.g., holding their money for “safe-keeping”
lies with both.Originally posted by crazy monkey:so the problem lies in the source country, not the destination.
The destination country is usually the root country of the problem.Originally posted by crazy monkey:so the problem lies in the source country, not the destination.
