1) You might want to take a look at the budget announcement for the details, off hand there are the GST rebate which you mention, special grant for education and upgrading reduction of road tax, new circle line, new highway, etc.Originally posted by eagle:1) What has been given? And what has been given that are not taken from us?
2) This I agree. However, our stand here is the government has definitely alternative ways to reach the budget required. Our reserves are rising from between 3 to 30 billion US dollars a year. Just taking out US$1 billion a year from this excess to sponsor our supposed financial aid => isn't it better than increasing out GST by 2%?
Even though there may be stronger economical reasons that are not mentioned to us (since when PAP decide to tell us a lot of things), the timing of the GST increase + ministery pay rise is bad...
3) Foreigners have the option of having their paid GST returned at the airport.
1) Most of it are not really related to 'helping the poor'. As you have mentioned, we will have to wait for this... But how long?Originally posted by Gazelle:1) You might want to take a look at the budget announcement for the details, off hand there are the GST rebate which you mention, special grant for education and upgrading reduction of road tax, new circle line, new highway, etc.
2) Although Singapore reserves is growing, but the world is also getting richer. As an open economy, Singapore is most vulnerable to external shock which can cripple Singapore plan to be a financial hub in this region. Hence our plan of building up a healthy reserve is right one and so far it has served us well.
3) Yes, the timing of the GST and minister pay rise is not good, but I have reason to believe that this is an coincidental event which have been planned for long time ago, or it has been long overdue due to the GE.
4) In order to qualify for GST return, you have to spend a minimum sum on a single receipt. And expenditure such as F&B, hotels, entertainment, transportation, are not allowed for GST rebate.
If we always doubt their intention, you will not be able to see the good side of this government. however I must also qualify that this government is not perfect.Originally posted by eagle:1) Most of it are not really related to 'helping the poor'. As you have mentioned, we will have to wait for this... But how long?
2) I agree with your point here (although some may call it propaganda). However, a US$1billion a year withdrawal cannot be expected as too much to take from our growth a year. Isn't it only right to spend a little more on what we earn?
The only thing I can think of is that this withdrawal will put more money into the economy, which may lead to further inflation, leading to the same price increase as seen after GST...
3) As you have said, it is long overdue due to GE. If that's the case, it shows that the incumbent knows that it will raise a public outcry. Thus, they have carefully timed it such that it occurs just a while after the elections, so that by the time the next election come, the public would have been 'softened' by both time and more election goodies.
4) I see your point.
The minister pay rise together with the GST increase is what causes most of the current dissatisfaction. Unless the government gives us a concrete plan on how the excess GST will be used to help the 'poor' soon, most of us will continue to complain.
hi, Mad, from your statement above it is clear that you are not sensible. You are naive, possess bad sense of judgement and bad taste.Originally posted by Mat Toro:lhl listens too, i think he is very humble. i think yu are baised just because he is son of lky.
Well said. These two are just here to oppose the sayings of people for the sake of opposing. So far this Mad guy is not contributing positively to the forum. Think people like Mad and Gazelle will be appreciated in the PAP's websites. They can surf there sing praises to PAP, kiss their asses, and be happy there without anyone telling them off. But one thing for sure they will not be rewarded for all these from their darling PAP.Originally posted by Fingolfin_Noldor:This idiot is a joke.
He doesn't give anything.
He just comes in charging at us demanding us to provide proof for something that we are just discussing about.
Simply put, his modus operandi is simply to hijack the discussion into something of his own choosing.
Mat Toro, people here aren't that stupid as to not see your methodology. Get lost. Your pathetic attempts to troll and to cry "free speech" is pathetic and hypocritical for a person who does not support it. You are pathetic liar and I have accused you and proven that you are intellectually dishonest, lacking in any form of intelligence, and too stupid for your own good.
Get lost Scum.
That goes for you Gazelle, since you have shown nothing but senility. Senile old man who can't even keep his private sex life to himself. Pathetic scum.
So you wanna elaborate further on what you said above. Tell us more!Originally posted by Gazelle:If you think with an open mind and if you can see the big picture, you will under the underlying reasons for the GST increase.
It's not about doubting the intention of the government; it's about their transparency and explanations they give us.Originally posted by Gazelle:If we always doubt their intention, you will not be able to see the good side of this government. however I must also qualify that this government is not perfect.
You better know what you are talking. Kindly elaborate on the above statement.Originally posted by Gazelle:If you think with an open mind and if you can see the big picture, you will under the underlying reasons for the GST increase.
Please read before you post. and stop acting like a SHEEP.Originally posted by Rock^Star:You better know what you are talking. Kindly elaborate on the above statement.
He can't elaborate, so far if you read his replies to those people, he is not elaborating. Some kind of empty talk from this smart ass!Originally posted by Rock^Star:You better know what you are talking. Kindly elaborate on the above statement.

What else from you smart ass who can't elaborate/back up what you say!!??!! If you can back up/elaborate what you say nobody will say otherwise of you.Originally posted by Gazelle:Another sheep glorifying his fellowSHEEP?
Originally posted by Gazelle:You mean these points? They don't make much sense, do they?
1) People has the tendency of asking because they always forget what has already been given. And that is the reason why a welfare social program will not work in this society.
How does this explain the "underlying reason for GST hike?
2) It has only been less than 2 months since the 2% GST hike kicks in, instead of making silly assumptions and speculating about the future, wont is be more constructive to wait for our government annoucement on their financial aid?
You propose a plan to the stakeholders of a company....do you explain your concepts before implementation of the plan or vice versa?
Surely the latter option speaks volumes of insincerity. Are Singaporeans not stakeholders of Singapore?
The idea for GST hike was mooted years ago, does it take that long for the govt to come up with a better Workfare scheme?
3) If a country is projecting a huge surge in tourism spending and influx of foreigners to Singapore, especially after spending so much money on building infrastructure, dont you think it make sense for the government to impose high tax on the their spending?
Oh...now for the development of tourism? That's new huh? Why was it not mentioned during the 'GST debate' in parliament?
Ok la... better than Mat Toro... How to elaborate when the government did not elaborate much yet?Originally posted by qlqq9:He can't elaborate, so far if you read his replies to those people, he is not elaborating. Some kind of empty talk from this smart ass!![]()
